The back verandah is fully enclosed and includes a self-contained laundry with washing machine, dryer, iron and ironing board; and the open front verandah faces a rose garden and the street.

MacDonnell House is on a residential street, an easy 1.5km walk from the centre of town, and has a pleasant garden of mainly native shrubs. A rear driveway leads to a double carport, providing undercover parking for two vehicles and also serving as a sheltered area for the barbecue.

MacDonnell House is one of four properties owned and run by Naracoorte Cottages. (The others are Limestone View, Smith Street Villa and Pinkerton Hill.) Richard Peake and Judy Barton established this people friendly Bed and Breakfast business in 1995 and have welcomed thousands of satisfied guests from South Australia, interstate and overseas.

MacDonnell House offers comfort, convenience and cleanliness with all modern amenities. The B&B is ideal for singles, couples, families and groups as well as corporate guests for short stopovers or longer stays. We have a 2-night minimum on long weekends and a 3-night minimum at Easter. The house is private for one guest group at a time even if there are only two adults.

The house has plasma TVs, DVD player, free local call telephone, free access to wireless broadband (BYO laptop or desktop computer) and reverse cycle air conditioning.

Bed linen, towels and toiletries are provided. Tariffs are value for money and include generous full breakfast provisions (eggs, bacon, tomatoes, fruit juice, boxed cereals, bread, jams and spreads, tea, instant coffee, coffee grounds and milk); and a complimentary 750ml bottle of wine with every booking.

Naracoorte is home to the South Australia’s only World Heritage listed site, the Naracoorte Caves National Park, 10km south of town. The park includes Wonambi Fossil Centre, telling the story of megafauna whose bones are preserved in fossil deposits, and caves with spectacular limestone formations, a Bat Cave and a cafe. The Caves, 10km south of town, are open 9am to 5pm daily except on Good Friday and Christmas Day.

Naracoorte is also central to four premium wine regions, Coonawarra, Penola, Padthaway and Wrattonbully, within a 48km or 30 minute radius.

Splash out in the large manmade Naracoorte swimming lake, with reticulated and chlorinated water and lifeguards on duty on very hot days. It is surrounded by lawns and shady trees, is free and is open from December 1 to March 31.

The town of Naracoorte has two seven-day supermarkets, three hotels, Thai and Chinese restaurants, a renowned family bakery, 24-hour McDonalds, Subway and many other takeaway food shops and a thriving shopping centre.

The Commonwealth Bank, ANZ Bank, Westpac, National Australia Bank and BankSA all have branches in the town centre; and there are also the Peoples Choice credit union and a Bendigo Community Bank agency. Out of hours, you can draw money from six ATMs.

Be sure to visit the award-winning The Sheeps Back wool industry museum, set in a historic three-storey former flour mill, and the Mini Jumbuk factory, where woollen bedding products for the world are made, and its visitor centre.

Naracoorte welcomes families to its many parks, including the Naracoorte Community Playground and Lions Pioneer Park, both in MacDonnell Street.

Great place in Naracoorte
We stopped off in Naracoorte en route to Adelaide. This cottage was beautiful, comfortable and a great base for exploring the area. Bedrooms and bathrooms were comfortable and well equipped. Great bonus was the complimentary bottle of wine and the breakfast provisions which we enjoyed. Richard was a great host, very responsive to our emails! Would highly recommend and definitely stay again.

MacDonnell House
We had a wonderful stay - the house is fabulous, everything we needed was provided, lovely and well maintained gardens. Easy walking distance to main streets and restaurants and shops. We’ll definitely be back.

4/5 Good

A warm cosy, well appointed home.
We arrived on a Friday afternoon with a focus on the Naracoorte horse trials. Opened the back door to feel a lovely kitchen with a bottle of red on the table. Opened the fridge to put some wine away and wow, bacon, eggs, milk, butter, oh and another bottle of wine. The home has four bedrooms, one king and three queens. Three bathrooms (yes three) one with spa bath. The owner was at all times a pleasure to communicate with. Great location with a brisk walk to town. This property was truly a home away from home.
