Check in was easy & chatty. Asked us if we'd like to dine with them - check in is at the local pub - so an easy YES. Meal was great, accommodation across the road at a renovated home into bed sits was perfect. They had their own ensuites, so privacy was no issue.
I stayed alone for two days. The check-in process was smooth, and the room was clean. However, the room was small and there was no desk suitable for working, so I used my laptop on a shared table. Overall, I think it passes the mark.
Comfortable bed, lockable room which included an ensuite.
Comfortable couches in lounge area. All kitchen and laundry facilities fully stocked and available to everybody staying.
This is the best kept secret of
the South Island of New Zealand.
Was so comfortable, loads of hot water, great kitchen with free laundry facilities. The town itself is worth investigating for any history buff. Would highly recommend it, and will to all travellers we meet on our travels
Delightful little cottage, with everything we needed, could only have been better if the laundry had had a dryer.

Great setup. Would be good to know that you need to check in at the theatre royal hotel. Other than that excellent value for money staff and facilities
Old fashioned fixtures and furniture - exactly as you'd expect in a Historic Cottage including old style teacups. Had walk-in robe and good size ensuite - TV to share in lounge and full cooking facilites including stove, microwave and full-size share refridgerator. We took the time and sat on the veranda. The vacant lot next door holds multiple information signs on Kumara, the area, its pioneers (all sorts). Nice small walk up and down the street with other info signs at different points of historical interest.
The property was neatly presented and overall pretty good. There was some difficulty in checking in because it was at the pub across the road. The room could be better heated ànd the addition of an electric blanket would-be good but maybe kiwis don't feel the cold. If you want reasonably priced food don't go to the pub it is way too expensive for pub food.
At the time of writing, this hotel has a 9.2 on Expedia. That is truly absurd.
This hotel is old (they don’t call it “historic” for nothing) and run down (featuring peeling wallpaper, a saggy matress, threadbare carpet and a kitchen that looks like it was built in the 80s). Making things worse, there is literally not a single thing of interest in Kumara (it only exists because it is a stop on the West Coast Wilderness Trail). Unless you’re using this hotel as a way to break your cycle trip, I see no reason to stay here.

Good for a quick sleep
It was not what we expected but it was ok. We were in one of several rentable rooms in a cottage we thought we had all to ourselves (read hotel.com descriptions closely!). We had our own bathroom but the living room and kitchen were shared. We think there was only one other occupant so it was not noisy. We did enjoy the community stove on a cold night while playing cards in the living room. The bed and bathroom were small but comfortable. There was mold on the bedroom curtain sheers. We told them when we checked out.
I was totally amazed as to what was on offer for my 55 dollar a night stay. The cottage was a lot bigger then expected with updated bathroom facilities plus laundry. Room was comfortable and easy access to the Theatre Royal across the road which catered for beautiful dinners and breakfast.
Very friendly service. Place was what we had expected. We had the place to ourselves which was really nice. There was also a great pop up burger, fish and chips shed across the road.
