“Nice and Convenient”
The hotel is only two blocks from the port in Old Montreal and located in a very nice area overall. The hotel is well kept with friendly english speaking staff which made communicating MUCH easier as I am not fluent in French. Subway stop is a 5 minute walk. Check in and checkout was a breeze. Definitely recommended! My only issue with the hotel is that it has a centralized AC system for the entire hotel which you have no control over for your room. The problem is that they leave it at the most minimum power. I was there during a weeklong heatwave and the room barely provided any comfort from the outside heat. It was difficult to get any sleep on a couple of those nights.
“cozy, European-style hostel”
Although the room was small, it had a nice, cozy, European feel which was in sync with being in the old, historic section of Montreal. It met my expectations but guests should be aware that the internet access is spotty in the room and the rooms and bathrooms are small. The owners were very helpful and friendly, and the food in the restaurant was excellent.
“Old-World Charm”
A unique property in an historic district. Only two blocks from the River, but on the east periphery of the Old Town (Rue Berri). Not far from the Latin Quarter and the Arts District, although it involves crossing Rene-Levesque and St. Antoine, so you do have to cross pretty distinct neighborhood boundaries. If you like to walk it's not a problem. Most Americans I know would be dismayed by this property. There is no elevator and lots of steps, the rooms are small, and the walls are thin. But if you're sick of chain hotels, want an old-world experience, and can score a good rate here, this is the place for you. Family-owned and family-staffed.
“It is OK for average travellers”
It is cheap for a city like Montreal.
“Good if you know what to expect”
This hotel provides a functional room at a good price in a good location. The room was rather small -- not much space other than for the bed. For my needs this was not a problem, but you should be aware of it. The bed was fine. The building is old, which gives it some character but also means there is no elevator and the sound proofing is not up to the standard of a modern hotel. In summary, I recommend this hotel for people who aren't too picky about the comfort level of the room (eg young people on a budget). People who want luxury should look elsewhere. ps - there is parking available at a garage down the street for a reasonable price
“Great location”
I love the location of Hotel Champ de Mars. This hotel is just a couple of blocks from Place Jacques Cartier which is in the heart of Old Montreal. There is also a metro station (Champ de Mars) a couple of blocks away. The basic room is small but it is clean and comfortable and very affordable. However, there is very little furniture (just a desk and some wall shelves). The bathrooms were all resently redone and are spacious. A full breakfast is usually included with the price (nice choices; eggs, pancakes, french toast, etc). The hotel is 4 stories tall but there is no elevator so remember that if you have trouble with stairs. There is no doorman and the staff is usually gone by 11pm so if you check-in after that you have to call.
“It was fine.”
Loved the European feel (had to walk up 3 flights of stairs!) and the restaurant. Location was perfect (going to see Cirque du Soleil that evening nearby). Check in person was great-gave us directions, etc. Disappointments: bathroom had used complimentary shampoo. The bed was creaky. We really wished we could have opened the windows (painted shut). But overall it was very charming. Great pictures on the wall and books to read on the nightstand. Good for a one night stay. We were told that we had a $1.00 phone charge to London, Ontario when we checked out that we didn't make but couldn't effectively argue. If I stay there again I will unplug the phone! But, essentially, It's really a cute and centrally located place and we just paid the $1.00 phone charge. And the views from our room were fantastic!
“NOT EXPENSIVE..GOOD WAY TO SAVE MONEY”
ME AND MY FRIEND CAME ACROSS THIS HOTEL AT A LAST MINUTE GOING INTO MONTREAL, THE HOTEL IS NEAR BY OLD MONTREAL SO IS GOOD, CAUSE YOU CAN WALK. THE HOTEL IS OK, THEY ARE ALWAYS ASKING YOU FOR TIP (I DONT KNOW IF IT IS THE HOTEL OR ALL CANADIANS), THE BED WASNT THAT COMFORTABLE BUT WHATEVER..
“Things to think about...”
This hotel is cheap, clean, safe, quiet, and very comfy. But, beware of the location. It's extremely dark at night, and there's a big park (Viger) close by where a lot of homeless people congregate and there's a city mission not too far away. And it's NOT steps away from shopping -- it's more like a 15 min hike uphill to get to a major street, but the metro is close by. Montreal is a very safe city, but if you're traveling alone, these are some things to consider. Also, about the 'free' breakfast. The food is free, but the service is not and they will ask for a tip. Also, the maids leave you a nice envelope thanking you for their tip, too. Now, I don't mind tipping someone on my own accord, but I don't like being asked for it.
“Nice Place”
Everything was great about this Vieux Montreal hotel. Though the encampment of homeless a couple of blocks north of the hotel made it a little spooky walking to the Metro stop early in the morning or late at night. The hotel, though, could not have been better.
