“Comfortable!”
Kyoto is a very spread-out city, with the attractions pretty much all over the place. This hotel manages to be close to a few key ones, and was really comfortable, so I'd definitely recommend it. High points were 1) Memory foam mattress! 2) Very close to the Nishiki Market, which is seriously a must for visiting Kyoto. Loads of amazing food for the grazing and buying. 3) Nearby street with a concentration of bars, restaurants, etc. 4) close-ish to the main train/Shinkansen hub (20-30 minute walk or a cheap cab). Overall, great location, not the cheapest, but not the most expensive, rooms were big enough to have a couch (which, if you've been to Japan, is not common) and very clean. We liked it!
“Great location”
Our family of four were comfortable in the twin room. We had booked a non-smoking room but were informed before our arrival that it was not available. A little skeptical of the ionizer with which they would clean a smoking room, we were pleased with the result - we would not have known it was not a nonsmoking room to begin with. The hotel is a bus ride from the train station and a little hard to find at first, but then it is walking distance to Gion and downtown shopping. Buses were convenient to other sights. Lots of restaurants close by. Staff were courteous and helpful. We really enjoyed our stay.
“Good stuff ....”
Nice place .. small elevators ... excellent restaurant on top.... helpful staff too...
“Nice staff, room for singles only”
We stayed in a lovely budget room in Shinjuku, spent one night in one of the better hotels in Kyoto, and then transferred to Sunroute for 3 nights. The staff were friendly and helpful. My partner speaks basic Japanese, but Sunroute presented the most communication difficulties. No real problems though. The room was small. I'm 6'2", and the bed was a glorified king single. Didn't have one night of decent sleep which probably tarnishes this review. Hardly any room for storing our clothes and bags, and we travel light (seriously!). The hotel is however nicely located, and the cafe downstairs serves basic breakfast and ok coffee. My partner enjoyed a steak from the upstairs restaurant. I loved Kyoto and our day of hiring bicycles was one of the best in our two weeks in Japan. We were exhausted and bought a bottle of red back to the room to kick back and relax. Only coffee cups in our room unfortunately, but (after some hilarious gesturing at the reception desk) the hotel managed to rustle up a corkscrew, and borrow some wine glasses from the restaurant. I thought the staff were lovely and the place was clean, but I think this place is better for the single or business traveller, rather than a couple on holiday staying multiple nights.
“Great location but no comfort”
The location was perfeect and the hotel itself is nice. They have free internet and the breakfast buffet is worth paying for, don't go to the cafe on the ground floor, food is weird. The only downside was the size of the rooms were tiny, for a smurf and we had a medium sized room. Also the bed was a strange waterbed or something that was really uncomfortable to sleep on. Overall good stay though if you will be spending most of your time sightseeing.
