“Can be better.”
Access to island by boat is not difficult. Overall setting quiet and relaxing. Staff are sincere. Room type I stayed is pretty small for 2 adults, even though it's the basic island bure (actually didn't notice it's room size when purchased online). You simply found difficulty putting your suitcases & bags. Beach is not crowded and off shore snorkeling is good over the reef drop. Neighbors are friendly.
“Somewhat dissapointing”
With new management we were hopeful the poor reviews were a thing of the past. Blood stains in the bathroom on arrival were an eye opener. The food was to be honest poor. One morning we waited over an hour for raw pancakes and a poached egg that must have been poaching the entire hour. Evening buffet was appalling. You could survive on it but it is not fare you'd expect at a resort. An exec chef could really turn this place around . Pool was nice and the snorkelling at the reef edge was the best we had ever experienced. The week prior we spent at the Outrigger so to see the difference was glearingly obvious. The resort needs direction from Management as there is definite potential there. The staff tried but it was obvious they lacked real training.
“Great location, so much potential with the set-up, but a little disappointing.”
We spent 3 nights at the Amunuca with my brothers and their partners. Our initial impressions were great, the welcoming was nice and the property looked good as we came in on the boat. One thing that struck our notice was a number of beach front bure's were incomplete and looked quite old/weathered. We all had 3 different room types, the standard rooms were really small although did the job, the beach front bure was a family room to my surprise, with a strange layout - the master bedroom at the rear with no view of the ocean and even the front room there was only a small sliding glass door - you would think being beachfront they would take advantage of this and open things up. We ended up asking for an upgrade to the Lomo suite which was much better - plenty of space, nice big bed, hot tub in the middle of the room. A few points , the food as other people mention is pretty average. If there is one thing they could improve with the biggest bang for buck it would be to get a decent chef /menu. We ended up walking around to the Tokoriki resort for dinner 2/3 nights where it was almost the same price and much higher quality. There was no hot water in our shower (luke warm only), yet the hot tub did have hot water and a shower handle so we used that. All in all, for what we paid I would say it was a decent place. It really has a *lot* of potential. A new chef, better service and replacing the old deck chairs would go a long way to living up to its potential.
“lacking”
I had high hopes! i have lived in fiji and been to many resorts.. I was quite surprised as i had expected better quality from what the pics depicted and the write up of the resort. The bathrooms were filty we stayed in the raintree lodge. ihad requested a cot that didnt happen. The bathroom tiles were brown and grimy i even took before and after shots while i wiped the tiles and grout with a washer! yuck. The interiors were nice and well presented, just dirty and not maintained. The blinds on the balcony doors all showed mould. The food was terrible, in all cases very pricey in fj and aud dollars. We ordered mahi mahi fish- dolphin fish we got 3 tiny fillets the size of 5mm covered in garlic butter and on the size pasta with red sauce, no flavour just crushed canned tomatoes at $30+ aud. we were so hungry and disapointed we then got a pizza! which was nice. Lunch we had toasted sandwhiches, also pricey and small. The pool had a thick scum on the water line. All pools tends to show a line, but i ran my finger thru it gross i know and it was about 2mm thick. This pool hadnt been scrubbed in months! THE Views setting and rooms were nice just lacking maintenance. They need to re thatch the roofs i know its costly but it looks terrible. we opted the second day to lunch and dine at tokoriki which was fantastic! Just didnt take kids.
“Good times, good friends but a bit tired”
We holidayed with close friends and were looking for a destination that met a friendly party atmosphere. We were also looking for fine food, particularly fresh seafood. We succeeded with 2 out of three. The food however was terrible at the Amunuca resort. On new years the food was in fact inedible and we refused to pay. lunch menu was the best probably because we were so hungry as breakfast was a greasy mass of bacon chipolatas and cold fried eggs which we skipped at $40 f/d per head..........try the peanut butter vegemite sandwiches. A saving grace is Tokoriki resort which is a 10 min walk away and is a 5 star hangout....strangely, the food which is ala carte and delicious, and the cocktails are cheaper than Amunuca. We went there at least 2 evening for dinner and coctails. The party atmosphere at Amunuca is a hoot. I would not go there if I had young kids or was looking for a romantic honeymoon destination. The hotel is tired and needs alot of renovation and the facilities are limited. Joey, our bartender was an absolute scream. He loved to cross dress and performed a gerat floor show on new years eve. The Let's get wet crew were sensational. The speedboat transfer was a once ina life time experience and I no longer have a fear of swimming amongst sharks at sundown 40 miles at sea with a fiji gold in hand. I would go back for a few days before heading to a new island for a rest.
“Dissapointed”
The photo's of this resort look gorgeous and the resort was obviously set out to be a very special place but unfortunately it hasn't been maintained and all the facitlities are worn out and no longer functioning. For example - they say there is a movie theatre showing 4 movies a day but on the day it rained the projector was broken - to be honest I don't think that projector has worked for a few years. The gym facilities are very worn down and look like they are 50 years old, all rusted and the upholstery totally worn down. The Spa is so dirty and the taps all pulled off the spa baths. The advert said there is 2 restaurants but when we wanted to order they said there is only one option which is a 4 course meal and it costs $65 each. There was no other options to choose from if you didn't want a 4 course meal you had to starve. Given you're trapped on an island you've not got any other options. The room was very clean and the staff incredibly friendly which was enjoyable. But I wouldn't go back there or recommend it to other people. It was definitely over priced for what you recieved.
“Don't go to Amunuca”
don't go to amunuca, food is extremely expensive and very poor quality. Mains are approximately $55 FJD each and would be of approx 2 star quality. We ended up eating alot at Tokoriki Island Resort which the mains were $47 FJD each and were of 5 star quality and very big portions. The rooms were ok however ours didn't have any curtains, we resorted to putting Blankets over the windows so we didn't wake up at 5am! Great location if they only knew how to run a resort....
“Almost Paradise...............”
This was our first time to Fiji and we were very impressed with the friendliness of the Fijians, who really make Amunuca Resort what it is. As for the management, well........not so much. How hard would it be to replace all the broken pool chairs, and buy a few extra hammocks? The resort is located in Paradise and is slightly marred by the 'sloppiness' of management in not having an eye for detail and fixing what is broken. Also, when the weather is not so good (or even when it is!) a few magazines wouldn't go astray for we tourists.........even a small library, where you could borrow books.......so many small, but important factors have been ignored, and prevent this resort attaining a perfect score. The children's playground is neglected and needs a facelift, as does the Reception room, where guests first arrive..........this is where first impressions are formed, and the very scanty, old and scratched furniture does not create a 4-star image. Same for the outdoor furniture.........and the "2nd swimming pool" (which is mentioned on the website, but in reality is full of leaves, and "closed until further notice". By contrast, I had no complaints about the rooms we stayed in. Shame 'though that despite our booking outside of school holidays, we were surrounded by kids! My feeling is that with a more attentive management, this resort would really be First Class, and worthy of the good wrap it gets on its' website.
“Nice location let down by the food”
A beautiful island, a lovely beach, friendly and warm staff, comfortable nice room. Horrible and overpriced food. It was a shame that the food was such a disappointment- small poor quality servings, and expensive. Often a lot of the menu is "unavailable" and you are left to eat pizza with raw dough- essentially inedible except for the toppings. The fish & chips 29FJD had about ten 5c sized pieces of fish in balls of batter that were dripping in oil. The dinner buffet (3-4 nights a week at 65FJDpp) is reasonable and the best of the worst when it comes to food options. You are told that the fruit can't be grown on the island because the soil is not suitable and supply is difficult because it comes from the mainland but if you walk over to Tokoriki Island resort along the track near the Octopus pool (newer hidden resort pool where all the Fijians seem to swim) you'll see banana plants. On arrival a Tokoriki Island employee pointed out the mangoes, papayas and pineapples that are grown and provided to their clients. Needless to say the food there was much better and although as expensive as that in Amanuca it was worth it. Overall the staff are friendly, but there's something dodgy, a lot of staff seem to do very little, many are seen to eat the buffet with the tourists and many of the beachfront bures have Fijians staying in them. Maybe that's how it's supposed to be but it doesn't feel right. We later heard that the place was in receivership...
“Hell in Earth. Never go there.”
The place is an absolutely mess. It was so bad that I decided to leave the place sooner than I expected (more people did the same the week I was there). They ruined my holidays. Everything is wrong in that place. All is broken and dirty. The manager doesn't care about anything and he is probably too busy writing fake reviews in other websites .Even when you are complaining about things he tries to run away and hide from you. I would not recommend this place to my worst enemy. I could write thousand of things that happened there if I'd have space enough in this web. If I would have paid by the hotel instead by Expedia I would have asked for my money back for sure. After 2 days we realized that there is another resort in the same island, so we went to lunch there for the rest of the days (Tokoriki Island Resort which is absolutely fantastic) just to avoid Amunuca. Amunuca doesn't deserve to have even 2 stars in its category. I would rate it with "minus 5" if possible. All the people staying there at that moment were as disappointed as I am. (some of them with kids). I would put a formal complain if would know how to do it in that country. I would even ask for my flights money back to the manager of the resort because he ruined my entire week. I feel sad for all the people who lose their money and holidays there. If needed I could explain further with details and photos I did about the poor conditions of the place. Thanks.
