This renovated art museum is now bigger and better than ever and now also boasts green credentials.
The de Young Museum first opened its doors to the public back in 1921 and today is one of the most visited art museums in North America. Take a trip across continents, via the Americas, the Pacific and Africa without having to leave the comfort of the museum. There are rich art collections including textiles and costumes.
Due to damage caused by a major earthquake, the museum was renovated and it reopened to the public in 2005. The new museum is much bigger in size due to its burgeoning art collection and its buildings now also boast eco-friendly credentials.
Take a tour of the permanent collection, via the fascinating artifacts originating from all four corners of the globe. On display, you’ll also see the impressive works of iconic American artists such as John Copley, Frederick Church and Thomas Hovenden.
Don’t miss the de Young textile collection while you’re here. Exhibits include colourful Turkmen carpets and sumptuous 12th-century Asian silks that sit happily alongside modern garments designed by renowned designers such as Dior and Chanel.
The experience continues outdoors with artworks by contemporary artists dotted around the Barbro Osher Sculpture Garden.
The de Young Museum is located in the heart of the Golden Gate Park, within easy reach of the rest of the city. Because of its locations, getting there is easy. There’s parking available nearby and limited spaces on the surrounding streets. You can also take the San Francisco Municipal bus (MUNI) to Golden Gate Park and you’ll receive a discount on adult entry to the museum. The Golden Gate shuttle bus stops at the museum and other attractions within the park. Or you could hire a bike and cycle there. This is a good option if you want to explore the rest of the park by bike.
The de Young museum is open from Tuesday to Sunday, with later closing times on Friday evenings from March until November. Note that the museum is closed during major holidays.
