This former military base is packed with panoramic views, history and culture and is surrounded by attractive open spaces.
Presidio Military Reservation has a special place in San Francisco and American history, as the Spanish originally set up camp in the area back in 1776, followed for a brief spell by the Mexicans. Of course, Presidio’s use has long since changed but it’s still the United States’ longest running military base, today having acquired National Historical Landmark District status. But its heritage explains its Hispanic name.
Today, this vast site covers over 600 hectares and boasts a world-class championship golf course, a cemetery, hiking trails and the Letterman Digital Arts Centre. The latter is one of the film-making campuses of Star Wars director George Lucas’ company. Presidio Military Reservation is set in beautiful grounds with evergreen pines lining the vast space. No matter where you are, the iconic Golden Gate Bridge will always be visible on the skyline.
For a beach stroll, head to Baker Beach. This rugged and beautiful beach can be found to the west of the main reservation. Presidio also has over 40 kilometres of hiking trails that meander through some of California’s most attractive coastline, perfect for a walk for all fitness levels.
Crissy Field is another popular haunt with visitors, cyclists, joggers and rollerbladers in particular. Located adjacent to Golden Gate Bridge, this sandy expanse of restored marshland provides an ideal place for visitors to relax and enjoy a picnic.
Presidio isn’t just about relaxation though. If you need a little intellectual stimulus, the Gulf of the Farallones National Marine Sanctuary, the Walt Disney Family Museum, the Battery Chamberlain and the Crissy Fields Centre are crammed with interesting information and exhibits, and are suitable for all visitors, regardless of age and attention span!
Finally, on a more sombre note, visit the San Francisco National Cemetery, the final resting place of more than 30,000 American military veterans and their families.
This only scratches the surface of Presidio’s attractions. Located immediately adjacent to the south of the Golden Gate Bridge, there are buses and a shuttle services that serve the park.
