Check out a string of brightly coloured bathing boxes in this beachside suburb and you’ll be treated to fantastic views across the bay to Melbourne’s city skyline.

The historic bayside suburb of Brighton is famous for its Victorian-era beach huts, which line the water’s edge with a rainbow of colour. Named after the waterfront city in England, Brighton has been a seaside getaway for Melburnians since its inception in the mid-1800s. Swim at the sheltered beach or stroll along the sand and take photographs of the pretty beach boxes alongside the distant city skyline. Admire the ornate historic architecture and modern mansions of this traditionally well-heeled suburb.

Brighton’s main commercial area contains a large shopping centre and several high-end boutiques. Visit the cafés and restaurants in North Brighton or grab ingredients for a picnic from the gourmet food outlets. Visit the Brighton Town Hall Precinct to see the magnificent Victorian-era town hall and surrounding gardens. Make your way to the Esplanade to see Brighton’s historic hub and find a string of historic hotels along the waterfront. Walk or cycle along the foreshore path and take in stunning views of palm trees and lawns backed by the wide expanse of Port Phillip Bay.

Middle Brighton Pier is a great spot to take in open views of the bay latticed by the masts and rigging of the yachts moored in the marina. Adjacent to the pier are the historic Middle Brighton Baths, a picturesque bathing complex that dates back to 1881. Relax or do some laps in the pretty baths or stop by the café and restaurants for refreshments. Watch the windsurfers and waterskiers whipping across the bay or rent some gear and join in.

The best-known beach strip in Brighton is known as Dendy Street Beach. This is where Brighton’s iconic bathing boxes line the waterfront. Admire the original Victorian architecture of the bathing boxes and take photographs of your favourites. Head to Green Point for views of the beach boxes with Melbourne’s city skyline in the background.

Brighton is 13 kilometres (8 miles) southeast from Melbourne’s central business district and is accessible by car, train and bus. Stay in one of Brighton’s superb heritage hotels to enjoy beach access and stunning bay views.
