Mauritius Holiday

Whether you’re seeking cultural activities, deep-sea fishing, diving or simply quiet beach relaxation, this island off Africa’s coast is a perfect vacation spot.

Mauritius is an exotic location that many dream of visiting…someday. Make your dream come true with a trip to this beautiful island, surrounded by soft sand, blue skies and endless ocean views. Interact with local residents from diverse European, Hindu, Chinese, Creole and Muslim heritages.

With air and water temperature rarely below 72 F (22 C), the island has pleasant conditions year-round for outdoor activities. Mauritius features great diving and snorkeling, with hundreds of marine animal species inhabiting the island’s surrounding coral reef. Make beginner dives in shallow waters or more challenging exploration of caves, cliffs and the 22 wrecks around the island.

Sail on a catamaran to view Crystal Rock and snorkel beneath it, join a dolphin watch or try deep-sea fishing for marlin out of Rivière Noire. Stand under the waters of the Tamarind Falls or Seven Cascades in this district.

Make the challenging guided hike up the monolithic Le Morne Brabant on the peninsula of Le Morne. This impressive south-side rock formation, a UNESCO cultural site, is recognized for its history as a refuge for escaping slaves. Enjoy the views as you hike in Black River Gorges National Park or ride a quad bike or four-wheel drive through Frederica Nature Reserve in Bel Ombre. Stay at a resort in Mont Choisy, Trou aux Biches or Flic en Flac. See art and architecture in Port Louis, the capital city.

The country’s cultural mix leads to diverse festivals and celebrations throughout the year. Watch the Indian Cavadi procession in January or February and Festival of Lights in October or November. The French father, Blessed Jacques Désiré Laval, is honored with a September pilgrimage. Muslims celebrate Ramadan’s end with the Eid-Ul-Fitr festival.

The island is about 1,200 miles (2,000 kilometers) from Africa’s southeastern coast, east of Madagascar. Fly to Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam International Airport near Port Louis on one of the 30 regular weekly flights from major European airports. Remember to drive on the left as you explore the beautiful island of Mauritius.
