"Beautifully furnished and decorated onsen with a lovely reception area, shop, two small bars and dedicated eating booths - we barely saw another guest. Staying in a traditional ryokan was a brilliant experience. The service was top notch and the food was amazing. It won’t suit everyone as you do get an appetiser, sashimi course, and various meat or fish courses as well as exotic vegetables - but there’s plenty, so even if you leave a couple of things you’ll be full. If you’re a fussy eater then don’t go to Japan and stay in a traditional ryokan and then moan about the food! The room is lovely with a beautiful bathroom and shower as well as terrace and onsen - 4th floor is the best and best view. The onsen was super hot and there’s also a public onsen. The one drawback is the local buses - this is up a very steep hill so you can walk to the town easily - but with cases it’s difficult. Buses only run to the station once or twice an hour so you’ll need to book a taxi - but do so in advance as they’re hard to come by. This hotel doesn’t offer its own shuttle bus."

"Very atmospheric stay, great to experience a traditional ryokan. Hosts exceptionally friendly and helpful. Location quite convenient and walking distance from all of Hakone-Yumoto. You get to book a private 'onsen', although this would not be your typical onsen experience in Japan, closer to a basement jacuzzi. Excellent and relaxing and great to have such an option, but worth considering if you wanted the Japanese onsen experience. Also the private bathroom is actually shared between the three rooms, in case that is a dealbreaker."

"The at thing about this hotel is location. There is an extensive breakfast and the staff are very kind and helpful. The rooms are spacious and the one we got had a Japanese authentic dinning area. The Onsen was okay, the great thing was the private option which is not as common in Japan. However, the place is quite dated and is begging for an upgrade…this is felt all through your the facility… Thank you to the staff for their kindness!"

We loved the private onsen on our balcony. It was very relaxing as we could see and hear the nearby stream. We'd definitely stay here again the next time we're in the area."

"Great place to stay while visiting as its a 5 min walk to their shopping street and train station, and the ryokan was very spacious compared to others I stayed in. The in room meals were excellent as was the staff service. And the onsens comfortably spacious as well. The view from the balcony was so relaxing and refreshing that I spent as much time there as possible. I would definitely stay there again."

"This was the big splurge on our trip to Japan and it didn’t disappoint. The hotel is set amidst the Hakone Mountain system and is such a nice refresh/reset between Tokyo and Kyoto. We booked a room for one night with a private onsen and had the Kaiseki dinner and buffet breakfast included. The dinner, which was served in our room, was possibly the best meal we had in Japan. There were so many choices at breakfast it was almost overwhelming. We booked the private onsen because we weren’t sure how comfortable we would be with the public baths - but in the end we were fine with them. The public onsen at Nanpuso is really beautiful with outdoor stone and wooden tubs as well as indoor tubs in both the men’s and women’s onsens. We barely had time to use our private tub because the public facilities were so lovely. Our room felt really luxurious. We walked from the train station but it’s all uphill so some may prefer the shuttle that’s available between the station and the hotel. "
