"The room was comfortable, however the smell from the bathroom was very bad. The staff attended to this promptly by cleaning the drain and offered us another room.
All staff were very friendly and helpful in providing local information regarding our travel plans."

"Hanlon Guest House is lovely. Stayed for two nights, and location is beautiful. We walked to cafes and restaurants and to the chairlift. Also penguins viewing platform is only metres away. The housekeeping staff are warm and friendly as well. Parking at front of property is so easy, as was checking in process."

"Greeted on our arrival by the lovely hosts Rebecca and Shaun. Rooms were amassing. We were in the Belvedere Room - it was presented beautifully! Spacious, lovely view out to the bay, luxurious touches, fantastic shower, comfortable bed and delicious hot breakfast prepared for us. Walking distance to restaurants, penguins and shops. Couldn't fault it. Highly recommend"

A very nice 3 room self contained apartment. Well equipped and decorated. Inside looks fairly new. Nice bathroom. Located at one end of the shopping strip it is also an easy walk to the beach, the penguin viewing and the few local food places.

We had a 2 night stay recently and thoroughly enjoyed it. The welcome was genuine and the rooms matched exactly what we had expected.
The view from the room was awesome and the room itself was emaculate. The bed was super comfy and all creature comforts were available.
Situated in the best position to explore the fishing port, and colonial buildings I would more than happily stay again.

The best area to stay in Detention is the main village centre, particularly around the waterfront and the primary road that runs through it.
This area is the heart of Detention, offering easy access to its limited but appealing attractions. You'll find a selection of local eateries, a general store, and accommodations with views of the Bass Strait. The village is small and easily explored on foot, with most points of interest located along the main thoroughfare.
Couples looking for a tranquil escape will find the village centre ideal. The focus here is on relaxation and enjoying the natural surroundings. You can take leisurely strolls along the coast, enjoy fresh local produce, and simply unwind without the distractions of a larger town.
For solo travellers seeking a peaceful retreat, staying near the waterfront provides a sense of calm and direct access to scenic walks.
When is the best time to go to Detention?
The best time to visit Detention, Tasmania, is during the warmer months, specifically from December to February, when the weather is at its most pleasant.
During these summer months, you can expect average temperatures ranging from 17°C to 23°C, with longer daylight hours. This makes it ideal for exploring the region's natural beauty, such as the nearby beaches like Doctors Rocks and the coastal walking trails. The comfortable weather also enhances visits to local attractions like the Detention River and the surrounding farmlands.
For those who prefer slightly cooler weather and fewer crowds, the shoulder seasons of spring (September to November) and autumn (March to May) are also good options. Temperatures are milder, typically between 12°C and 18°C, and the landscapes are often lush and green.
