Discover some of Lisbon’s fascinating medieval history as you explore the fortress than looks over the city and River Tagus.

The Castle of São Jorge is a medieval fortress that dominates the skyline of Lisbon from its vantage point on a hill. Discover the Castle of São Jorge and its fascinating history by embarking on a guided tour. Explore its labyrinthine interior and sprawling gardens.

Challenge yourself by making the journey to the Castle of São Jorge on foot. The steep climb takes you past traditional Portuguese clubs, outdoor cafés with views of the city and tiled buildings and pottery stores. As you approach the top of the hill, the 6th-century Moorish fortress rises abruptly in front of you.

Pass beneath the stone gate that marks the entrance to the castle. Pause for a moment to admire the size of the Castle of São Jorge. Originally the home of Moorish royals, it was taken over by Portugal’s first king in 1147. The castle served as the royal residence until a new palace was constructed in the centre of Lisbon.

Join a free guided tour of the castle to discover the artefacts and stories of Lisbon’s royal history. Explore the scenic gardens, which have views of the city, before you make your way to the top of the castle’s towers. Despite parts of the castle being destroyed over the centuries, the stone walls and 18 towers that surround the original structure remain largely intact. Climb the stairs to reach the top of the towers for excellent photo opportunities of the city. Watch as the sun goes down over the River Tagus to see the amber light reflecting against the whitewashed houses of Lisbon. In the Tower of Ulysses you’ll find the câmara escura, a periscope that allows you a closer view of the city.

The Castle of São Jorge is located immediately above the Alfama district and can be reached on foot or by bus. The castle is open daily and an admission fee applies. Enjoy a meal or snack at the on-site restaurant.
