"Newly-renovated rooms was the price of admission for me. Many other places locally in this price category have filthy and dated properties, often littered with broken building locks, rude staff and transient-types crowding the hallways. The Costa Mesa Inn was an oasis, comparatively. Check-in was easy. The desk staff was pleasant and helpful. What's great about the CMI is its walkability to so many restaurants, grocery stores, the OC Fairgrounds and OCC. The room was very nice - everything was new inside. The bed was comfortable and the AC worked well (new unit). They're still renovating, so expect the outside property to continue looking dirty and old, as well as the pool not working. The only real negative was housekeeping. They were rude, bossy, and insisted on speaking Spanish. I was not allowed in the room when she was cleaning, and said I needed to go to the lobby for a half hour. After she cleaned it once, I told her I no longer wanted service. The next day, after I left my room, she insisted on cleaning it anyway, and did a half-ass job. That prompted me to request at the front desk that she no longer clean my room. Housekeeping also left their carts in places in the hallway that would make it hard to get around them. They would gossip loudly in a room - sometimes eating there - and left their large bins blocking staircases. Once the housekeeping issue was addressed, the rest of my stay was very pleasant."

"This is about twenty minutes away from the Balboa Peninsula, and a better price than other hotels closer. Our room was the two story condo with two bathrooms. It had plenty of lighting, and was clean. Our 4 teenagers and 2 puppies loved the space they had to play, and my husband and I loved having a separate bedroom with doors for privacy when the kids wanted to stay up later than us. The kitchen was stocked with a lot more tools and things than other inns we have stayed at. It was roomy, and the sink was even big enough to wash our small dogs after the beach."
