Full disclosure: we had a truly excellent and very memorable stay at Vanira Lodge! But then we had a pretty good idea what to expect when we booked it. While this is an absolutely charming property, with stunning views and world class staff, it is also very quiet, pretty isolated and somewhat limited in it's amenities. The lodge is up a steep (and not very well maintained) drive-way, off a quiet road, and only has a small restaurant. The bungalows are really wonderful, clean and tidy and comfortable, if pretty basic, and, though the new pool will be an added bonus, it's a long way down to the ocean. The nearest town - which has an excellent store, pharmacy / clinic and gas stations etc. - is about a half hour drive away. There are a few restaurants there that we very much enjoyed, but no "night life" as such. If you plan to drive to Papeette it's about 1.5 hours during the day, and we recommend leaving *at least* 2 hours at any time close to rush hour!! The reefs are truly excellent for swimming and snorkeling, but there are no real beaches nearby - other than with coarse volcanic sand. While world famous as a surf venue, in our opinion it is really "experts only" with a very nasty reef break and quite a long way out, and we could not find any decent boogie boarding sites anywhere on the island. Finally note that there is a rainy / hot season and a cooler / dry season. We were there in the rainy season, which was gorgeous for swimming, but also *very* rainy on a few days!
