Monti Travel Guide

Tourist Guide
Monti featuring a city, heritage elements and a ruin
Relax in wine bars and restaurants, take a walking tour and discover the famous Colosseum and other historic sites in one of Rome’s prominent districts.

Rione Monti is known for its bohemian atmosphere and proximity to some of Rome’s famous historical sites. Shop in boutique fashion stores and wander along the cobblestone streets of this historic area.

Shop in a vintage market for antique cameras and home goods. Take a walking tour of the famous Colosseum or stroll through a large public park and admire ancient sculptures. Visit the nearby Basilica di Santa Francesca Romana, a beautiful 12th-century Roman church. This traditionally working-class district is a great place to experience an authentic Roman lifestyle.

The Colosseum is a short walk from the center of Rione Monti. Take a guided tour and learn the history of this giant oval amphitheater. The structure is considered one of the greatest architectural achievements in Rome. It was built in the 1st century and used in ancient times for public spectacles and gladiatorial contests.

Find the Parco Del Colle Oppio, a historic park in Rione Monti. Here, the ruins of Roman Emperor Nero’s golden house were rediscovered. Though many of the monuments are in a state of disrepair, the park is still regarded as a significant archeological site in Rome and a peaceful place to relax.

Wander through the calm streets of Rione Monti. Peruse bookstores and organic markets. This area has numerous local art galleries and vintage clothing stores. At the historic gathering area of Piazza della Madonna dei Monti, admire the two-tiered Renaissance fountain.

Reach Rione Monti and the Colosseum easily from the Colosseo metro station. Use the neighborhood as a starting point for a historic walking tour or stay in Rione Monti to simply enjoy the atmosphere as you stroll along the gently slanting cobblestone streets.
