The Talbot Hotel, Malton, North Yorkshire

"We found The Talbot a very nice hotel. The only thing we didn’t like was that they added a 10% service charge onto our evening meal bill. The receipt said that this additional charge goes directly to the waitress and if you didn’t want to pay it you could ask for it to be removed. Any tip should be at the customer’s discretion. How embarrassing would it be to ask for them to remove it!! The hotel should make sure it’s staff are paid well so they don’t have to rely on customers’ tips. Other than that we really enjoyed our stay with the hotel being in a very good location for visiting Malton and surrounding areas."

"Easy to find, plenty of parking. Easy and quick check in. Owners are very friendly and helpful. We had the double room above the pub and it was a really nice size with tea/coffee, fridge and ensuite with shower gel, shampoo and towels. The place could do with a bit of an update, run down in places. The plug in the bath did not work and the shower trickled out so cleaning off after a day out walking was difficult. Lovely peaceful location, 20 mins drive from York and can see plenty of the North York Moors from here without driving for too long. Obviously this room is at a pub, so it is noisy in the evenings so don't expect an early night. It was a perfect base for us."

Nice log burner with plenty of wood and kindling etc. We stayed a week and there is so much to do in this area. The cottage makes for a great luxurious stay."

"Members of my family (15 of us plus Cooper the dog) have just had the most fabulous time at Upper Helmsley Hall celebrating our 30th wedding anniversary. We have all thoroughly enjoyed the lovely house and its unique features throughout but particularly in the downstairs rooms. We have had lots of fun playing games inside as well as outside in the spacious and lovely garden including tennis in the very nice court available. The kitchen is a lovely size for us all to gather and enjoy breakfasts and lunches together but it was also marvellous to be more formal and take dinner all together in the large dining room. The drawing room and lounge are so interesting and great places to relax for the evening and you can always find a quiet space on your own if you just want to read or be on your own. The communication has been excellent and the hosts representatives have been very friendly and nearby to assist should we have any questions. It was the perfect setting for our Victorian Murder Mystery Night! We would be delighted to return and would highly recommend."
