This controversial monument portrays human suffering through depictions of three soldiers in various stages of anguish. It is a contrast to most typical heroic portrayals.

The War Memorial stands on Piazza Garibaldi as one of Viareggio’s most controversial artworks. It reflects human suffering via three soldiers who are shown in different stages of distress. One man lies on the floor and another reaches desperately up in the air. The third man stands facing the looming danger approaching them. The work of art, crafted by Lorenzo Viani in 1927, is considered contentious because it diverges from the typical heroic images associated with war.

Controversy has always surrounded the Viareggio War Memorial. After its inauguration, the locals were so angry that they renamed the Piazza Garibaldi as the “Piazza delle Paure” (Plaza of Fears).

Note the Expressionist style of the statue, which is formed entirely from bronze. Make up your own mind as to the controversial nature of the sculpture, which demonstrates the underlying reality of war. Soldiers are dying, falling and fearful, rather than standing tall with heroic expressions.

The majority of Viareggio’s main attractions surround the statue in the heart of the city. Many visitors see the War Memorial on their way to one of the many destinations that border the square. Take a relaxing break at the largest park within the city limits, the Parco Dei Bambini XXV Aprile, across the street. Meander through the charming paths lined with trees as you approach the scenic waterfront, one block away from the large park.

Stroll down the city’s main promenade, Passeggiata di Viareggio, to see its bistros and shops by the sea. Stop off at Villa Paolina, which is the former summertime home of Paolina Bonaparte, the sister of Napoleon. Explore its diverse museums and galleries.

The War Memorial is an ideal spot to meditate on the chilling reality of war. Take in the solemn and peaceful atmosphere in Piazza Garibald, as it transports you away from bustling city life. The monument is easy to access and there is no fee.
