Surrey is located very near London, yet its mature woodlands and lush green fields seem much farther from the city. Explore grand historic homes, cycle along scenic disused railway lines and visit sparkling modern cities.

Pretty Farnham is one of England’s best-preserved Georgian towns. Located on the border with Hampshire, the town has several distinct shopping areas. Check out markets that are held regularly, enjoy a tranquil walk along the river and visit the town’s 12th-century castle.

Not far from Hindhead is a large depression of dry sandy heath known as the Devil's Punchbowl. Head to the top of 894-foot (272-meter) Gibbet Hill, one of Surry’s highest hills, for the best views over this natural hollow. Explore the network of scenic trails and bridleways in the surrounding area.

Be sure to visit Waverley Abbey, the remains of a church and monastic buildings 2 miles (3 kilometers) southeast of Farnham. Located along the River Wey, this structure was one of the first Cistercian abbeys built in England. Across the river, spot Waverley Abbey House, a beautiful Georgian mansion once owned by Florence Nightingale's brother-in-law.

See the impressive collection of historic cars, motorcycles and bicycles at the Brooklands Museum. The site of the world’s first purpose-built motor racing circuit, the museum displays a variety of aviation and automotive exhibits. Look for a World War II Wellington Bomber and the only publicly accessible Concorde G-BBDG in southeast England.

Tour Loseley House, a stately 16th-century manor surrounded by beautiful gardens. Inside, look for ornate paneling in the Great Hall, as well as George IV’s coronation chair. Walk through the stunning 2.5-acre (1-hectare) Walled Garden surrounding the manor. The garden is divided into separate “rooms” with diverse planting styles, including a Flower Garden traversed by an intricate network of pathways.

Surrey is located between Gatwick and Heathrow airports and is less than 40 minutes away from central London. To get here from other U.K. destinations, use rail or bus services.
