Good concept, mediocre execution
I like Yotel's concept, tested it for a night, and left disappointed and frustrated. PROS: On Market Street, convenient to Orpheum, Moscone, subway and most attractions downtown. Quiet room. Clean. New. Friendly staff. CONS: Three self-check-in screens for check-in, but two aren't working, and the other freezes looking up my reservation, so I wait in line for the one human checking people in; when it's my turn, she explains "they're updating." (If you're all about technology, why do updates during afternoon check-in hours?) My "premium cabin" was just north of claustrophobic; some rooms apparently have no windows. Shower and toilet walls are only frosted glass, seems like TMI if you have a roommate. "Monsoon" shower more like a gentle sprinkle. Barely any counter space at sink. Heated towel rack is inexplicably behind toilet, forcing you to drip all over your tiny floor to get to your heated towel. And though I'm comfortable in most of Tenderloin, this street corner feels particularly sketchy. Finally, all the room lights confused me. The bathroom light is a button in the mirror. The purple mood lighting around the TV console has a switch by the door, but which switch, and how do I dim vs. turn off? I hate it when hotels complicate the simple things; this is the first time in 20 years of hotels that I've had to call the front desk for help turning off a light. OVERALL: Last resort for me. Your mileage may vary.
