Unlock a vibrant cultural hub of Montreal in this student suburb, where you can watch classic movies, eat a range of cuisines and experience dramatic theatre

Explore the Quartier Latin (Latin Quarter) and mingle with an eclectic student population. Named after the university district in Paris, this area is the home district of Université du Québec à Montréal. Students both inhabit the quarter and encourage a vibrant culture of art, music and entertainment. Watch a drama show, see an evening movie and then indulge your tastebuds at one of over 50 restaurants.

Find the Quartier Latin in northeastern Montreal, next to the university. Access the district along its main thoroughfare, Saint-Denis Street, which features a number of boutique stores and art-splashed façades.

Indulge in a classic movie experience at Cinémathèque Québécoise. Films are mostly shown in French, though classic English movies are also featured. This movie conservatory also displays an extensive collection of films and movie memorabilia. Browse the permanent exhibition and learn how special effects shaped the filmic art form. Delve into the history of film manipulation see how the special effects in many famous films were produced.

For an on-stage performance, book a seat at Théâtre Saint-Denis. Though founded as a movie theatre in 1916, it was re-established as a performing arts studio in 1980. Watch a play or a moving orchestral show. Saint-Denis also hosts light stand-up comedy during the Just for Laughs festival.

Walk to the east of the quarter and face the Notre-Dame des Lourdes Chapel. Special features of this 19th-century basilica include its vibrantly coloured marble arches and a golden statue of Madonna, which is perched atop the church roof. Spot this chapel's reflective, black dome from most areas of the neighbourhood.

See where students go when they aren't eating, drinking and partying at the Grande Bibliothèque (Great Library). Rent an audio guide and take an informative self-guided tour of over 2 million books and 4 million documents.

Get to the Quartier Latin using a frequent subway route to Berri Street. Alternatively, catch a bus along Saint-Denis Street and get off in the heart of the suburb.
