"0-stars: Very disappointing. We were 2 families in our group that booked based on the high Expedia rating. We arrived just before midnight (not 1am as hotel claimed in response to the other family’s review) and were told of an unexpected $25 late check-in fee plus the standard security deposit. Deposit was fine, and I inserted my credit card into the terminal, but late fee was never disclosed in reservation confirmation. When we politely asked about it, the attendant became aggressive, raised his voice, and even threatened to increase the fee to $50. When we tried to clarify, he abruptly removed my credit card and began closing the check-in window, asking if we even wanted to check in. We didn’t feel this was proper treatment, and asked about a refund, but he said we’d have to deal w Expedia. While contacting Expedia, he returned complaining our calls disturbed his sleep, and then shouted, “are you ready to check in now?” We genuinely felt unsafe and left immediately despite having no backup for our families late at night, nor knowing if we’d receive any reimbursement. After trying several full hotels, we finally found rooms at Embassy Suites, which was a huge relief and a great experience. Now seeing that other guests reported a similar treatment. Had we researched more carefully, we’d have avoided being subject to this. Hope this helps other families stay away from this property. Also hope Expedia protects its customers by removing this property from its options."

"Very nice hotel "

"In order of the review categories, more or less.... 1) we were in the very first room in the hallway off the main lobby and it was LOUD, night and day. 2) front desk staff were very courteous, but management is abhorrent. See my NOTE below. 3) hotel was about a 15 minute walk down to the wharf, but not much else going for its location. 4) breakfast is very simple fare, but located in a tiny room which was overwhelmed by the morning crowd with insufficient seating. NOTE: when we arrived for a spring break stay we were told the pool and hot tub were out of service, and the front staff admitted they had been so for many months, which very much disappointed my little boy. I won't go into the litany of lame excuses provided by staff and management in an email, but the only notice of them being out of order was hidden in fine print way down on their website (see attached photo) instead of in a prominent banner at the top of their home page, nor did they apparently notify Expedia. When I emailed the manager regarding my dissatisfaction the best she could offer was a $50 refund, but despite two additional follow-up emails and a phone call to her I have had zero response, nor have I seen any refund. I spent a career in the hospitality industry and the product and customer service we received at this hotel were sadly deficient. Take it from a pro, there are lots of comparably priced hotels in the Monterey area and I would strongly advise you avoid this one."

"The rooms could use some refresh of furniture style as well as the bathrooms but otherwise, very comfy and fine for casual overnights. "

"Friendly, efficient staff found a quick solution to accommodate early check in. Room very clean, roomy and relaxing. Easy walk to downtown Monterey and the Wharf make it a great location. Evening glass of wine and full assortment of breakfast options in the morning add to the the experience. "
