Near San Sebastián, discover a picturesque town with a charming fisherman’s quarter, a sandy beach, historical sites and excellent restaurants and bars.

The Basque town of Hondarribia (known as Fuenterrabía in Spanish) is a beautiful small municipality in Basque Country in northern Spain. Find an interesting Old Quarter with great ancient walls, wander through the famous fisherman’s district and enjoy a fun day on the beach.

This lovely Spanish town houses many attractive historical and natural sites. It’s located on the banks of the Bidasoa River, facing the popular seaside town of Hendaye, France.

Throughout history Hondarribia played an important role as a border town between different kingdoms. It belonged to the King of Navarra until the beginning of the 13th century, when it was conquered by Alfonso VIII de Castilla, King of Castile. Discover the remains of Hondarribia’s rich past, including an old castle, the city walls and one of the best-preserved fortresses in Basque Country.

While you are in Hondarribia, visit Portu Auzoa, the popular port, and the Barrio de la Marina or Barrio de la Portua, the interesting fisherman’s quarter. Find the popular street Calle San Pedro and take photos of the many colourful houses with picturesque balconies. Discover the small building with one central arch, home of the Cofradía de Pescadores de San Pedro (Saint Peter’s Fishermen Brotherhood), a group founded in 1361 to protect the rights of the many fishermen in town.

Enjoy the fascinating natural sites of Hondarribia, such as the wetland Marismas de Jaizubia. It’s a rich ecosystem with more than 250 different bird species. See the great mountain Monte Jaizkibel, where you’ll find rock caves and great walking trails surrounded by spectacular geological scenery. Spend a great day sunbathing and participating in watersports at the town’s inviting sandy beach.

The town of Hondarribia is located near San Sebastián, the capital of the province, also home to San Sebastián Airport. Reach the area easily by plane, train or bus. There are also roads in very good condition that connect the town with the rest of Europe.
