With a vast student population and an entrance via a semi-submerged carriage, this district has an abundance of innovation and creativity.

As the former setting of the city’s main university campus, Bockenheim remains one of the cultural hubs of Frankfurt. The youthful and eclectic student feel is reflected in the modern, cosmopolitan atmosphere of this densely populated district. Stay in Bockenheim or plan a visit to get to know this busy neighbourhood through its specialty foods, among its many other highlights.

For a sense of the eclectic sights, sounds, tastes and smells in the area, peruse the Wochenmarkt Bockenheim. On Thursdays, this weekly market has rows of stalls selling fresh produce from the region. Rising from the square where the market is held is the iconic Bockenheimer Warte, one of the four towers preserved from the medieval walls that once enclosed the city.

Admire the tower’s timber-framed summit and cylindrical body. Snap photos of its eponymous train station with an entrance disguised as a half-submerged train carriage. This kind of quirky innovation is typical of the area, where you can also find many inventive culinary options and architectural gems.

Among the highlights of Bockenheim is the Senckenberg Museum. Browse the fascinating natural history displays, featuring one of Europe’s largest dinosaur exhibits. Look toward the future at the nearby Experiminta museum. Head north to the Frauenfriedenskirche, whose façade includes three tall, narrow arches.

Appreciate the neighbourhood’s bohemian ambiance as you frequent quaint cafés and cabaret theatres. Relax in one of the typical Frankfurt pubs. Wander past the lake of the scenic Rebstockpark and bring your kids to its indoor water park. On the park’s southern border stands the Frankfurter Feldbahn Museum, where you can inspect antique railway carriages.

Find the district in the northwestern corner of Frankfurt. Drive northwest from the city centre for less than 20 minutes or travel by public transportation to the Frankfurt Main West or the Leipziger Straße.

Bockenheim is a place where invention and intriguing history combine.
