If you're not prepared, travelling can be testing. But don't hit the panic button just yet. Follow these handy tips and enjoy a hassle-free start to your getaway in New Italy. What to pack in your hand luggage:

• A plane trip can be a pleasure if you've got all the right things. Firstly, you'll want a few toiletry items, such as deodorant and a toothbrush, a fresh change of clothes and a magazine or two. Next, find room in your bag for your phone, tablet and chargers, your important medications and maybe a proper neck pillow too. Lastly, don't forget to take your passport, travel docs and your credit cards.

Do not pack the following items in your hand luggage:

• While the list of prohibited items can differ between airlines, the general rule of thumb is nothing sharp, flammable or explosive. This includes screwdrivers, blades, fireworks and fuel. Sports equipment like hockey sticks, and items that could harm other people, such as guns and swords, won't be allowed on board either.

What to wear on a flight:

• Go for comfort over style. Prepare for changes in cabin temperature by wearing layers, and pick flat, enclosed shoes like slip-ons.
• You're probably aware of deep vein thrombosis (DVT), a blood clotting condition caused by long periods of sitting. To minimize your risk on board, stay hydrated, consider wearing compression tights or socks and keep your legs and feet moving.

• Have your travel documents and passport within close reach. They're the first items you'll be asked to show at airport security.
• Your jacket, belt, keys and other items in your pocket, like your earphones, will be required to go through the X-ray machine. Make the whole process easier by removing them before your turn arrives.
• For just a few moments, you'll have to unplug from technology. Your phone, laptop and any other electronic devices will need to go through the scanner.
• Remove gels and liquids from your carry-on bag. They usually need to be sent through the X-ray machine separately. Each item should be in a container no larger than 3.4 ounces (100 millilitres) and everything must fit inside a single quart-size (one litre), clear zip-close bag.
• It's also likely that you'll be asked to take your shoes off to be X-rayed, so wearing slip-on sneakers is always a good idea.
• Take all prohibited items out of your carry-on bag. If you have any sharp objects like a pocket knife or tools, put them in your checked luggage. They won't be allowed in the cabin.
