Top 5 things to do in Fiji
More than 300 islands, white sand, crystal blue water, world class snorkelling and sweeping green highlands are a world away from the rat race but just a four-hour flight from Sydney. Fiji is a great spot for a few days – whether you’re after R&R or adventure. Here’s our top 5 activities in Fiji.
Snorkelling Cruise
There aren’t many better places in the world to get under the water. Hop on a Whale’s Tale snorkel cruise and sail to some of the best snorkelling spots. This 100-foot schooner sails to Honeymoon Island, where you can explore crystalline lagoons before filling up on a gourmet lunch buffet onboard. If a snorkel mask doesn’t take you deep enough, you can always scuba dive off the Yasawa Islands.
Nausori Highlands
It’s easy to get so wrapped up in Fiji’s coastal wonders – the sand, coral, water, and resorts – that you forget about the rolling green expanses of its interior. The sprawling terrain of the Nausori Highlands, reached by 4-wheel drive, is breathtaking in its colour and scope. A day trip takes you past rushing waterfalls, sugarcane fields and lush green valleys on your way to a spectacular view.
Cloud 9
Cloud 9 floats – in the ocean – and it serves pizza. Okay. Now that we’ve established that it’s the best place in the world, you should also know it has two levels, sunbathing decks and a fully stocked bar. These are the facts, ladies and gentleman. Spending a day out on Cloud 9 is a great way to unwind.
Robinson Crusoe Island Day Trip
Don’t let the name fool you: Robinson Crusoe Island is steeped in uniquely Fijian history. This small island just southwest of Viti Levu was long a sacred location of chiefly gatherings. A day trip to this eco-enclave is the ideal way to witness the inextricable relationship between the island’s nature and culture. Take a dip, indulge in a local “lovo” feast, and see live performances, including a coconut tree climbing demo.
Mamanuca Islands
If you’re staying on Viti Levu, the Mamanuca Islands are just an hour’s cruise away. The tiny strips of sheeny sand boil paradise down to its essential elements. It’s your favourite beach’s favourite beach. Take an air-conditioned catamaran along South Sea, Castaway, and Bounty if lounging is your aim, or swim, snorkel, and kayak through the clear water if you’re up for a firsthand foray.
