Expedia Expert: W Bali’s insider tips on how to have fun in Bali
We chat to W Bali employee Aurel for her hot tips on where to go and what to do on a Bali getaway.
Aurel, tell us a little bit about your role at this cool Bali hotel?
I’ve worked at the W Bali for two and a half years. I’m the W Bali Insider that will greet you once you step in into W Bali. Finding what’s new in Bali and beyond is part of my everyday life. I love exploring the island and finding the hippest new neighbourhoods, venues and restaurants so that I always have something to share with my guests. Helping them see a different, unexpected side of Bali, and helping them have a memorable holiday in paradise is what makes me happy. When I’m not at work, you can find me singing and dancing whether on the dancefloor or on stage.
Where do you send guests for a drink outside the hotel?
If you’re a cocktail lover or after a chilled out drink, Baker Street Social is the spot for you. There’s also the newish Ling Ling, which has a more casual atmosphere. If you’re going for glam, Shanghai Baby is just around the corner, and there’s also the new La Sicilia.
What’s the one drink guests should try at the WOO bar?
I have two favourite cocktails that I believe are a “must try”. The first one is the very popular I Candy, which is also our signature cocktail. It’s a cachaca with muddled lime wedges, brown palm sugar served with a ball of cotton candy.
The other one is Blue Bloody Mary. Yes it’s blue. It uses clarified tomato juice to give the blue, along with our homemade Butterfly Pea Flower extract. Spiced with fresh chilli, horse radish and fresh celery stalk, it’s a good one!
What are the most popular places to eat near the hotel?
Besides our famous FIRE or Starfish bloo, Bambu is great for Indonesian food, along with Merah Putih, which has a stunning interior. If I’m craving for Asian food, Sarong or Mamasan are just perfect. Raijin is a must for Japanese food lovers. For French cuisine, Metis is still number one.
Where do you go on your day off?
It really depends on my mood, but I should say that chilling on the beach watching sunset is one thing I won’t miss!
Where’s the best coffee in town?
One word: Revolver
Where is the best place to buy a gift or souvenir? What would you recommend people buy?
Seminyak square is one of the best places for souvenir shopping, but if you have time and are willing to bargain, then the strip along Raya Seminyak is a must to get local products.
What’s Bali’s best kept secret?
Green Bowl. It’s located about 45 minutes from Seminyak. Make sure to wear the most comfortable shoes or sandals because 305 stairs are waiting until you reach the beach. If you’re lucky then you might meet some monkeys on this small beautiful beach.
What’s the best day trip activity you recommend?
There are so many things that can be done in the island. I would suggest to trying at least one watersport, like Stand Up Paddling, and then horse riding and of course exploring Ubud.
Where should people go to party?
After the chilling sunset at WOOBAR, dinner and then some time on the dancefloor is the best way to spend the night when you’re staying at the W Bali. When it comes to partying, it really depends on the guest, the music they like and what kind of party they’re after for what I’d recommend. Most of our local guests love Mirror, which has popular international DJs lineups, while those who like darker underground house, I would suggest they go to Jenja. We often have international DJs playing like Pete Tong, Hayden James, London Beats playing at Woobar. Ah, and don’t forget our annual events like SPF, Silent Disco, Anniversary and Festive.
What are your favourite activities on offer at the hotel?
I love yoga at WOOSKY. The morning yoga is so relaxing and you can pose with the sound of waves crashing. Sunset yoga is also amazing. You will pose with the sunset and DJ beats in the background. Since I love singing, the brand new W Sound Suite is definitely my favourite. It’s a playground for musicians and music enthusiasts like me.
What is the best way to relax in Bali?
Here’s a tip from me for a full one full fun yet relaxing day: Start the day with a good breakfast (I love FIRE breakfast), book into our Away Spa to experience signature treatments such as Bamboo Warrior pre- treatment, head to Starfish Bloo for a champagne Brunch, then head to the W iconic pool before sunset drink and late night party. You’re welcome!
