The location was fine - central to the town. No chef - so had to get breakfast and dinner in other pubs in the town. This was due to letting the chef go - but I feel we should have been informed of this prior to our journey. No parking which meant having to park a good walk away.

I stayed for 2 nights, unfortunately shower head fell apart soon after arrival and as I did not hand in my key when I went out for the day the room was not serviced in any way. When advised of useless shower there was no spare nor plumber available. Bed was clean and comfortable but the hotel generally looking tired.

We had booked and had confirmed two double rooms, when we arrived to check in about 2pm there was only one room. The pleasant hard working member of staff tried hard to find us alternative accommodation to no avail. In the end two of us (myself and partner) had the "emergency" room, which was a large shower room with a a toilet and sink. A double bed was erected for us and although comfortable was not exactly what we were looking forward to.

We stayed here as a base whilst attending a wedding locally so other than sleeping in our room we didn’t experience what else the Star had to offer. The staff were very welcoming, breakfast was good but the bed was a little hard. We’d happily stay there again though.

Shambles from start to finish
We have stayed at this hotel before and knew it was not good, but as we wanted to stay in the town for the jazz festival we didn't have much choice, and hoped it might have improved. We were wrong, and if anything it was worse. The bed had springs poking through the mattress, to remote didn't work, nowhere in the bathroom to put a wash bag and nowhere to put shampoo etc in the shower except the floor. Breakfast was chaotic on the first day - no menu so you had to make your mind up on the spot as to which items you wanted cooked. Only other options were cereal or toast (which you had to cook yourself with an inadequate toaster). No marmalade. Cooked breakfast ok, but ingredients cheap. So bask, that we paid to eat out on the following two mornings (Henry's in the High st, which is everything that the Star Is not. Saturday the room was not cleaned, though to give them some credit we did get a bottle of wine as a way of apology. Sunday room not cleaned until after 4pm and then the bins were emptied but the liners not replaced and the glasses were removed but not replaced so we couldn't drink the wine! Had to endure the breakfast again on our last morning because of checkout etc and this was a shambles. No tables laid, most of the food not put out, napkins run out, ordered fried eggs and got scrambled! We will not be returning.

Lovely old building with plenty of character. Nice clean rooms, and great food at breakfast, quality ingredients, and not a tinned tomato in sight. All the staff are lovely, i realised I had left a bag behind when i got home, rang them up and they knew about it straight away, and packed it in a box to post to me.

disgusting hovel avoid at all costs
I was the only guest at the hotel, when I arrived i was told that they should have been closed for the night but forgot to remove it from the website. The room was disgusting, dirty with cigarette butts on the bedside table that had clearly been there for quite some time. Outside the attached pub which was underneath my window there were 2 fights around 10pm. No wifi in 2019

Good location. Room ok, but heating not working and it was a very cold evening and night. Heater suppliedand eventually heating fixed, only to fail again next day No fruit, or yoghurt at breakfast and only jam and marmite for toast. Breakfast full English, very good.

Stayed for a night. When we arrived we were welcome by a nice lady who took us to the room. We were amazed by the room. It was clean and warm. Looked really nice. The bed was great and slept well. The bar was good and breakfast was fantastic. Could not fault this place.

Friendly service.
Very much a pub with rooms - very busy (and noisy) on a Saturday night and you’ll be lucky to find parking nearby. Friendly service - when we complained that our room was immediately above the bar and the noise was too much we were immediately moved to a quiet room on the top floor without any problems at all. Breakfast good and room clean and comfortable.

Great location, lovely old building, staff were very friendly and helpful eg allowed us to store our bikes inside. However, the shower drain was blocked and so water would not drain away, WiFi did not reach the 2nd floor and TV reception was poor. At breakfast 2 boiled eggs were served raw.

We entered the Hotel bar to be recognised as not being local and were given a friendly welcome by all. There was a problem with the heating so mobile heaters and extra blankets were provided, we were welcomed at breakfast by a big open fire. Upton is a small but quirky (in a nice way) place to visit, some interesting shops.

Parking was one problem, as I walk with a cane. But my room, I believe it was Room 7, was over the kitchen and when the fan was on and it was very noisy, which was from 8:00 a.m. in the morning and the day I was there, until 10:00 p.m. at night. I was told the fan would go off at 8:00 p.m. but it didn't and so in the end I had to go down to the staff to ask them to turn it off.

Great stay. Its an old building, but the room was fine. Members of staff couldn't be more helpful. Even arranging quick breakfast for me as I had to dash early. Lovely area, would have been great to explore had I not arrived in dark, and left early !

NO hot water shower
No hot water for shower even after running water for 5/10 minutes. Booked double room, but got a room with 2 single beds in it. TV bracket broken so the TV pointed at floor. But with a poor product, the staff did their best.

Pleasant room but in need of more maintenance
Something up with the hot water. Having been advised by staff to let the shower run for 20mins, we still had no hot water. the staff weren't really bothered and I got the impression I was annoying them by asking for help with this issue - no one came to check the solution was resolved. The mattress needs replacing as the springs dig in to your body. And The room smells of stale cigarette smoke. However, the room does look nice - nice furniture and sheets. Feel like I've been ripped off over all though.

Great base if you are going to any of the festival
It is an old building. If you are in Upton for one of the festivals it is a perfect base. Staff are all really good.and that includes the numerous cleaning staff who keep it all spotless. The en suite room we stayed in was pretty basic but clean and serviced every day. Great choice for the inclusive breakfast. No lift, stairs only to upper floors.

Pub was lovely and friendly. Room was filthy, bathroom had lots of black mould in shower and around toilet. Wardrobe lining was ripped and dusty, top of wardrobe had a good couple of years dust on top! Curtains were not properly fitted to rail. No hairdryer. Bed springs were my worst friend ever all night long! Breakfast was so full of grease it could of oiled an engine! Yuk. But toast was nice and the coffee.

Check in difficult as couldn't find anyone, but once found very helpful. Room quirky, creaking floorboards, old fashioned, uncomfortable bed. Breakfast was good. Manager extremely helpful but seemed to be doing everything.
