Admire this tower built during the Tudor period and then climb its stairs for spectacular views.
The Layer Marney Tower is a spectacular sight, rising out of the green pastures of the Essex countryside. Climb this 500-year-old structure and capture commanding views of the River Blackwater. Browse historical artifacts inside or stroll the outer gardens on a sunny day. Follow the Wildlife Walk and spot cattle grazing. A quaint tea room is a great place to spend a lazy afternoon, looking over the Blackwater Estuary with a hot brew.
The tower was commissioned by Henry, the first Lord of Marney and a friend to King Henry VIII, in 1520. Before completion, however, both Henry and his heir died, meaning that the building was not finished according to plan. Visit today to experience the tallest Tudor Gate in England. This 24-metre (80-foot) structure functions today as a private residence, family attraction and events centre.
Notice distinct elements of Tudor design on the tower such as its small arched windows and twin circular towers. Climb the stairs to the top and enjoy the reward: a stunning view of the seemingly endless Essex countryside. Down the stairs, the History Room displays information on the families that called the tower home as well as a scale model of the original design.
Head outside and take a calming stroll around the Victorian-style gardens. Smell the wafting aromas of a rose display and follow the carefully marked paths around the knot garden. Take the kids along the Wildlife Walk and watch them petting lambs, pygmy goats and highland cattle at the farm. Buy a refreshing tea from the tower tearoom while the kids let their imaginations loose in the playgrounds.
Layer Marney Tower has limited opening hours on selected days. In July and August, it is open daily except Fridays and Saturdays. Check online for up-to-date opening times. The tower charges admission.
