We loved the staff and hospitality at Momijiya. My husband said it felt like we were staying at our grandma's house. We loved the ryokan experience as well. We really felt we were getting a more intimate Japanese experience.
The food really put us Americans out of our comfort zone, but we wouldn't have wanted it any other way.
Our rooms were quaint with nice view, and the comforters on our futons were incredible comfortable. Like sleeping inside a warm cloud. This is a great spot to feel like you're escaping to the mountains but still getting to explore Kyoto during the day.
Perfect place for Japanese ryokan and food experience. Room with mats, low table and chairs, and basic tv. I opted for twin beds to make it easy getting up, otherwise you sleep on the floor on futons. Dinner is at a nearby restaurant close to water, and Japanese breakfast is at the hotel. You dress up in Yacata and slippers during stay.

It was an amazing experience! The service and staff were one of the best , everything was so organized! We stayed two nights it was enough to experience traditional Japanese cuisine, tatami rooms and open air onsen with beautiful scenery!
My husband and I stayed here for our honeymoon. The staff is wonderful and very attentive. Breakfast and lunch is very authentic Japanese cuisine, be aware if you have picky eaters or dietary restrictions. The rooms are clean and roomy with complimentary tea and snacks replaced every night. The only negative is the location, if you are traveling from another city be aware their shuttle is only for select times and if you miss that the only option is the city bus. The shuttle is offered to the station and back to the onsen everyday and they will ask what time from their choices works best for you. They are very prompt on time and do not enjoy you being late since food is made fresh for the time you selected, overall an amazing experience and would return if we returned to Kyoto.
This is a traditional ryokan nestled in a quiet town and near several walkable attractions and restaurants. We especially enjoyed the hiking trails abs scenic views. Meals were fabulous and staff were very helpful and friendly.
The staff is incredibly kind and helpful, the food was great and the overall experience felt very authentic and more relaxed than I expected. The private baths were incredible!
We enjoyed a fantastic holiday at the hotel. The staff was offering more than luxury hotel services to us. The food was delicious with high variety. The private bathroom was great .
Took a friend's trip and this place was incredible! Beautiful, accommodating, and the service was impeccable. Mizuki was our Attendant and he was so kind and professional. He was so helpful. We will be back again!

It is a 20 min taxi drive out of kyoto which costs around 5,000 yen.
The properly is a very old building. However because it is a traditional ryokan, it fits that image and hence it's fine.
Do include the full board option where they take you to a riverside location 5 min away on a shuttle bus. That location is spectacular for a kaseki meal. They have geishas do a short performance there too by the riverside. The meal itself is nothing home to write about but the experience is great.
I would only recommend a maximum 1 night stay. Use the private bath option for 4,000 yen.
On our recent trip to Japan we wanted an authentic experience staying in a ryokan.
We were greeted by an extremely attentive staff who whisked our luggage away to our mountain view room. We received hotel slippers and were given a tour of the hotel. Our modest room had a low table and chairs with a tea service, a private bathroom, tatami mat floor and yukata robes. We had 3 hours until dinner so we enjoyed the private onsen nestled in the forest overlooking the forest. For ¥4000 ($27) this is not to miss. Then, at 6:00 a shuttle takes you through the small town and down to the riverside to a restaurant on the water. You cross a long bridge into the restaurant where you are greeted by the efficient staff and seated in low chairs to enjoy haute cuisine by riverside. The meal is presented in a bento box and is a work of art. The second course is a salty fish and then a soup prepared at the table. While the soup is cooking, a geisha performs and chats with you. Finally, the restaurant turns out the lights so you can listen to the frogs and watch fireflies! The shuttle returns you to the hotel and the staff has prepared the room for bed. The futon are all on the ground and it’s bedtime. The next morning, you are treated to an equally beautiful traditional savory Japanese breakfast. The shuttle will take you as far as the Honazono Station. If arriving from Kyoto, the shuttle will pick you up from there if you arrange it, or you can use the GO app to call a cab to go.
Unfortunately, I felt compelled to pass along how disappointed we were in this hotel and the overall experience.
Check in was extremely rushed. No time to breathe before we were practicaly pushed into two chairs and had the front desk employee go over all the details we would need for our 1 night stay.
Then we were brought upstairs to our room where they dumped our bags, filled a tea pot and wouldn't leave until we sat at the table and had poured our tea.
The room was in terrible shape. There was cracked tiles in the bathroom, mildew build up in the sink, the ceiling paneling was not fully attached, water damaged walls, the list goes on. the air conditioning is also very old and not up to the challenge of hot Japanese summers.
We did enjoy the private onsen experience but again were very rushed to get there and get out with an employee banging on our door when we still had 10 minutes before we had to leave.
Dinner was at a cute little riverside restaurant. Drinks (including water) were all over 400yen and the pretty location couldn't make up for the food. The sashimi was warm and slimy and most of the food tasted a little off or like it had been sitting out for hours.
Given the price point and prior good reviews, we were pretty surprised this experience. We loved the area but left before breakfast was served the next day. We would not return to this hotel or recommend it to anyone.
The dinner was absolutely our most favorite part of our stay. We took a shuttle down to the beautiful water side area, crossed a bridge and we had an unforgettable experience surrounded by fireflies and a beautiful Maiko-San who came to our table to chat and take pics with our family.
I’m no expert by any means, but having had the opportunity to experience two ryokans this trip (first in Osaka, then Kyoto) with similar prices but vastly different quality, I feel compelled to compare and comment.
Service: Generally felt rushed during our stay. Check-in was technically at 3pm but shuttle was at 4pm, so we did not arrive until 4:30. Similarly, check out was at 10am, but shuttle was at 9:20. At breakfast, there was a sign nudging you to pay before 10am as it gets busy then. For an experience that’s suppose to be relaxing, this took away from it.
Room: In dire need of renovation. Room was visibly old and had a musty smell from the moment of walking in. There would be whiffs of piss when the AC wasn’t circulating air. In-room baths were stained and scary to look at, let alone use
Bath: Public bath was tiny so naturally, everyone opts to pay extra to book a slot in one of the two private baths on the property. Depending on when you check in, you may not get a slot until the next morning. That said, the private bath had incredible views and was the highlight of this experience, for sure.
Food: Mediocre at best compared our first experience, which we had in-room. Presentation was good, but flavors were just a bit off. Breakfast was better than dinner.
All in all, our Osaka ryokan experience felt like luxury hotel with spa with authenticity while this felt more like a beat down budget hotel turned tourist trap.
