Plateau Lodge

Plateau Lodge

10/10 Excellent
"The lodge was very well maintained and the staff were helpful and kind enough to sort us into a room even though id accidentally booked the wrong nights stay. Our room was clean, warm, and comfortable. The fully equipped kitchen was useful to keep costs down by cooking our own food. There was a large lounge/dining space which was plenty big enough to share with other guests and they kept the fire going for us so everyone was cosy. A good selection of toys/books/games for children/families and our 3 year old loved being able to befriend and play with other children. 10/10 for our first family trip to whakapapa."

Frequently asked questions

What is the best area to stay in Kakahi?
The best area to stay in Kakahi is within the village itself, particularly around the main road, for easy access to its unique offerings and the surrounding natural beauty.Kakahi is a small, quiet village known for its connection to world-class fly fishing, particularly for trout in the nearby rivers like the Whanganui and Kakahi Stream. The village centre is modest, with a general store that serves as a community hub, and accommodation options often include charming holiday homes or lodges that cater to anglers. It's a place where you'll find genuine local hospitality. For couples seeking a peaceful retreat and outdoor activities, staying directly in Kakahi is ideal. You'll be right on the doorstep of prime fishing spots and can enjoy the calm of rural New Zealand. It's also a great base for exploring the Tongariro National Park, which is a short drive away, offering excellent hiking opportunities. For solo travellers who appreciate nature and a relaxed pace, Kakahi provides a good base for fishing adventures or simply unwinding in a tranquil setting.
When is the best time to go to Kakahi?
The best time to visit Kakahi, Manawatū, New Zealand, is during the warmer months, specifically from late spring to early autumn (November to April). This period offers the most pleasant weather for outdoor activities, which are central to the Kakahi experience. You'll find longer daylight hours and generally milder temperatures, making it ideal for exploring the surrounding natural beauty. For those interested in fly fishing, which Kakahi is renowned for, the peak season typically runs from December to March. During these months, the rivers are usually at their best for fishing, with higher chances of a good catch. The clear waters of the Whakapapa and Whanganui rivers are particularly appealing to anglers seeking quality trout. If you prefer hiking and exploring the Tongariro National Park, which is a short drive away, January and February are often the warmest and driest months, providing the best conditions for trails like the Tongariro Alpine Crossing. However, these months can also be the busiest, so booking accommodation and activities in advance is advisable. While the winter months (June to August) bring colder temperatures and potential for snow, they can be appealing for those interested in winter sports at the nearby ski fields of Mount Ruapehu.
