3/5 Okay

Liked: Cleanliness, staff & service
Good points: lovely and warm, very comfortable bed, good central location, good food and warm service Bad points: very poor lighting and only inconvenient electric sockets in room. Despite reserving a Privilege Room that was supposed to include a view, I was given a room on the street. Not only was there no view, there is a pub right opposite and the noise from the revellers there went on into the small hours and the refuse collectors start up at 6am. The hotel really has no right to make that room a privilege room. Because the hotel is old and the ventilation is poor, there is no way of shutting out the noise. I needed earplugs and noise cancelling headphones and still I could hear it. Do NOT book their privilege room.

Liked: Room comfort
Hotel showing its age and short of staff
The hotel is in a good location, close to the centre and with the rear facing out on to the river. It is however showing its age. From the car park entrance to the main lobby, there was a clear smell of damp and this was evident through the stairwells etc. The room itself was functional and clean, providing the functional essentials as expected. The hotel is very understaffed currently and unco-ordinated. The check-in process was extremely quick, however it became apparent that this was because key information had not been communicated- a sheet of paper was handed out with some basic information, but didnt cover some key details (parking costs, booking breakfast times) which we had to go back to ask about later. At breakfast, the restaurant was regularly turning people away who hadnt realised they needed to book a timeslot with reception- who presumably hadnt told them on checking in. The timeslot itself was simply needed to allow the minimal amount of staff the time to catch up and clear away tables from people who had already left- tables were regularly available, people were just waiting for them to be cleaned. At other times, it was evident that hotel residents were simply walking in and helping themselves as nobody was available to welcome them. Some staff were excellent, but need support. Decent enough hotel for a short stay, or with a large group, but the Premier Inn directly across the river is likely of better value these days and in better condition.
