If you think Ho Chi Minh City’s central District 1 is hectic, then wait until you reach the maze-like streets of District 5 of Cholon (Chinatown).

Once a separate city, Cholon is now Ho Chi Minh City’s bustling Chinatown, complete with pagodas, Peking duck and cheap merchandise. Having overcome persecution and wars, Cholon is a symbol of the resilience of the Hoa ethnic group in Vietnam. The sprawling Binh Tay market is a sensory overload, but follow your nose to the hawker stalls and you’ll be just fine. Don’t fancy “1000-year-old” egg? Try sizzlingnoodles from a wok instead.
