This green oasis is found right in the city centre, offering visitors a moment of calm as well as an insight into Singapore's past.

Overlooking the city from its hillside location, Fort Canning Park has been an important site throughout the history of Singapore. Once a home for Malay kings, it has played a diverse range of roles since being built in the 14th century. Today's visitor can see archaeological digs, the remains of the colonial period, and the grave of a Malay monarch. Pristine grass lawns are crossed by a web of paths – perfect for a gentle stroll. In the evening, a variety of concerts are staged in the park's amphitheatre.

Three distinct walking tours are guided around Fort Canning Park. Heritage on the Hill traces 500 years of change in the city, as shown through events here. The flora and fauna living in the park are explored on the Trees of the Fort tour, while Fort Canning Spice Trail looks closely at the fascinating variety to be found in the spice garden. Visit the ASEAN Sculpture Garden and relax in the peace of the park.

Follow the 19th century walking trail to see the residence of the Malay kings, along with the archaeological remains of the fortress built on the site of the park in the 1800s. This trail will also bring you to the grave of Keramat Iskander Syah, a Malay monarch.

Cannons and a gunpowder store have been preserved here from the days of the British Empire, as well as more colonial exhibits, in the form of the officers' quarters and the cottage of Sir Stanford Raffles. From more recent times, the 'Battle Box' where the decision to surrender the island was taken during the Second World War can also be seen.

Near Orchard Road shopping area, Fort Canning Park is very central, and can be easily reached on foot from many of the city-centre hotels. Pay parking can be found on Percival Road, and public transport is plentiful. Open every day, entry is free.
