"The front desk is so friendly and helpful. The room is well maintained. We didn't get a chance to taste the breakfast since we had to leave very early, but the hotel prepared some early takeout for us."

"Absolutely loved our one night stay here. Even though there was a heat wave, the air conditioner worked enough to be able to sleep. Great camping experience! Waking to the sunlight highlighting the teepee print was the best way to start the day."

Nestled in nature with views of the Alabama Hills, Sierras and Inyo Mountains

10/10 Excellent
"We stayed at Reo's Ranch in Lone Pine for our Mt. Whitney hike (Aug 6–9) with a group of 8, and it was hands-down one of the best stays we've had. The house is spotless, spacious, and comfortable — plenty of room for our whole group without feeling cramped. The living room gave us a great space to relax and regroup after the hike, and kitchen utensils made cooking for the group a breeze. Beds had clean, fresh sheets and towels waiting for us, and the AC kept the place cool and comfortable even after long, hot days on the trail. Location-wise, it's incredibly convenient — easy access to both Whitney Portal and Lone Pine town. The front yard is spacious enough to park several cars, which was a huge plus for a group our size. And of course, the views are unbelievable — you couldn't ask for a better backdrop before or after a big hike. On top of all that, the owners were wonderful — great communicators and genuinely caring hosts who made the whole stay easy and stress-free. Highly recommend for anyone tackling Mt. Whitney or just visiting Lone Pine!"

"An amazing experience from start to finish. The location in the Alabama Hills of Lone Pine was absolutely perfect for us during Badwater 135 race week—peaceful and beautiful, with Mount Whitney in the background, yet only a short distance from town. Our host was incredible—friendly, accommodating, and genuinely available 24/7 if we needed anything. With temperatures over 100 degrees, the AC worked perfectly and kept the house cool and comfortable. The kitchen was spacious, spotless, and had everything we needed for race preparation and meals. The entire property was exceptionally clean, comfortable, and well maintained. We couldn’t have asked for a better home base for such an important week. Highly recommend, and we would absolutely stay here again!"

"This property is truly special. I’ve never been able to relax the way I did while at Lone East. Lydia, the owner/host, was just amazing and so welcoming. My only regret is that we didn’t have time to share a glass of wine and get to know her better. Thank you for a very special few days."

"What an amazing place! Got a tip from a local to take a short drive up the Mount Whitney portal and I highly recommend everyone do the same. The views from the room are AMAZING! Waking up to the sunrise on the mountains was something I'll never forget. Communication was fast and very helpful. Highly HIGHLY recommend staying here."

Frequently asked questions

What is the best area to stay in Cartago?
The best areas to stay in Cartago are generally around the main highway corridor (US-395) for convenience, or slightly off it for more seclusion, depending on your priorities. For most travellers, especially those passing through or using Cartago as a base for exploring the Eastern Sierra, staying near the US-395 offers the most practical option. You'll find a selection of accommodations, including motels and a few independent inns, directly accessible from the highway. This area is ideal for those who value easy access to amenities like petrol stations and small eateries, and for quick connections to nearby attractions like the Manzanar National Historic Site or the Alabama Hills.Couples or solo travellers looking for a more relaxed and scenic experience might prefer properties a short distance off the main highway, perhaps closer to the Owens River or with views of the Sierra Nevada mountains. While Cartago itself is a small community, some of the independent lodges or guesthouses a few miles north or south along the 395 offer a quieter setting with better opportunities for enjoying the natural beauty of the area.
When is the best time to go to Cartago?
The best time to visit Cartago is during the spring (April to June) and autumn (September to October) months when the weather is mild and pleasant, making it ideal for outdoor activities and exploring the region.Spring in Cartago brings comfortable temperatures, typically ranging from 15°C to 25°C. The landscape is lush and green following the winter rains, and wildflowers are in bloom, especially in the surrounding hills and valleys. This is a great time for couples who enjoy hiking or scenic drives, as the conditions are great for exploring areas like the nearby Sequoia National Forest without the intense heat of summer.Autumn also offers excellent weather, with temperatures similar to spring and clear skies. The changing colours of the foliage, particularly around the Owens Valley, provide stunning photographic opportunities. This season is particularly good for those interested in fishing or birdwatching, as the milder climate attracts various species.
