Directly outside the monument proper sits the uncovered remains of a pit dwelling originally constructed in 1850. The dwelling would have been covered inside an oblate oval "cocoon" of mud and clay supported by beams and poles situated in the holes you see here. It would have been a relatively comfortable dwelling in all seasons. With a single opening for a door, the coolness of the interior would have been maintained during the hot summer. In the winter, a fire pit directly under the only opening in the roof would have provided enough heat (with the door closed off by leather or cloth) to keep the inhabitants warm and dry.
