Admire the Ecuadorian gargoyles and neo-Gothic architecture at this immense church before taking in the panoramic views from its towers.

The Basílica del Sagrado Voto Nacional (Basilica of the National Vow) is considered a neo-Gothic masterpiece and is the largest of its kind in the Americas, often evoking comparisons with Paris’ Notre-Dame Cathedral. Take a look around the impressive structure to wonder at its majestic architecture and charming sanctuary and chapels.

The inspiring church dates back to the beginning of the 20th century, when devout worshippers contributed donations toward its construction, before it was completed in 1909. Locals who gave stones to help with the building were rewarded with the honour of having their names inscribed in the rock.

The basilica is a protruding and ornate part of the Quito skyline from around the city due to its location on a steep hill near the historic centre. Marvel at the complex neo-Gothic engravings as you approach the church. Gaze up at the majestic arches with their carved gargoyles of typical Ecuadorian animals, such as iguanas, armadillos, dolphins and Galapagos tortoises.

As you enter the basilica, you will be surprised by the height of the ceiling, 30 metres (98 feet) from the floor. Peruse the bronze images portraying evangelists and apostles on the stained-glass windows. See the sunlight penetrate the translucent panes and illuminate the red-and-gold interior.

Two elaborate towers rise above the sanctuary and its chapels. Ascend the 115-metre (377-foot) towers up the stone steps and make sure to take a break at the internal balcony to see the nave and stone arches. Once you reach the summit, use the telescope to spot some of your favourite attractions, such as the Virgin statue on El Panecillo. The adventurous among you may climb up an iron run to the tower’s true summit, from where the views of the city and its surrounding mountains are breathtaking.

Purchase a ticket for a guided tour when you arrive. Visit the church in the evening to see it illuminated in blue and green lights.

The Basilica of the National Vow is located in the Santa Prisca district of the Old Town. You can reach the site, which is open every day, by bus or taxi.
