Admire the breath-taking spectacle of some of Hawaii’s most famous waterfalls at this family-friendly state park.
The dramatic volcanic landscape of Hawaii Island is home to many waterfalls. However they are often in remote locations that are a challenge to reach. Akaka Falls State Park is the exception to the rule. It is home to two of the island’s most spectacular waterfalls, the 30.5 metre Kahuna Falls and the 135 metre Akaka Falls. Both can be accessed with a minimum of physical effort, making this park a perfect excursion for all ages.
Follow the paved trail that loops through the rainforest, full of giant ferns, wild orchids and tropical bamboo groves. You’ll be able to learn all about the native plants and animals found in this beautiful natural environment, thanks to the many information panels dotted along the route.
You’ll first come to Kahuna Falls where the water cascades down the cliff face, through the trees and vegetation clinging to the outcrops. The best views are to be had from the look-out platform, just a short climb up some steps. The seating available at this point makes Kahuna Falls a perfect stop to take a break. Just under 250 metres further on, you’ll find Akaka Falls, one of the most famous waterfalls on the island. Here the water plunges in free-fall into the pool below, at the bottom of a deep gorge.
The trail covers 800 metres, and although this is a popular attraction, it never feels overcrowded. The terrain heads uphill as you approach each waterfall, but it is never too challenging for visitors of any age. This gentle walk is the perfect way to enjoy the natural beauty of the island’s environment.
Akaka Falls State Park is located approximately 18 kilometres from Hilo, at the end of the Akaka Falls Road. Driving by car is the best travel option. There is ample onsite parking which is included in the entry fee. The park is open all year round.
