See Sydney for under $20 a day
Sydney is a destination within a destination. It’s one of the most popular Australian city breaks for Expedia’s travellers and there’s little wonder why: ocean, CBD, bush, shops, theatre. There’s almost too much to do.
Sydney is also considered one of the most expensive cities to live in, but with a little imagination and research, you can make the most of the city without breaking the bank account.
If you’re planning to visit Sydney, here are some ideas on how you can have a day out for just $20.
Visit the National Parks
One way you can explore Sydney without spending too much money is to bask in its natural beauty. What better way to do this than visiting the National Parks? Whether you’re a couple looking for romantic one-on-one time, or have the kids in tow, there’s plenty of nature for everyone.
The Blue Mountains National Park, located 80km west of Sydney, is a famous destination for locals and travellers. The activities are endless: canyoning, hiking, and abseiling to name a few.
My all-time favourites include bush walking to Wentworth Falls, visiting The Three Sisters, and taking on the Canyon Trail. Another option is to stroll around the town of Leura, where you can window shop in the antique stores. Breathe deep and take in the natural beauty.
If you’re up early, start the day having breakfast with the kangaroos at Glenbrook National Park, where a small National Park fee is all you’ll pay. There’s a great little bakery in Glenbrook that’s perfect for coffee and pastries – pick up your supplies and head down to the park. You want to be at the park before 8.00am to guarantee a kangaroo sighting.
A Day on the Harbour
A holiday in Australia is never complete without seeing the famous Sydney Harbour Bridge. It’s a destination in its own right. You can climb the bridge for an extraordinary view of the Habour, but that’s definitely not within the $20 budget. Instead, walk or cycle across the bridge for free. Check out Pylon Lookout, where for just $11, you get a fantastic view and can check out the interesting exhibits on the bridge’s construction history.
Catching ferries is also one of the most cost effective and scenic ways to explore Sydney. Hop aboard the ferry from Circular Quay to Watsons Bay, where there’s plenty of restaurants and cafes. A must-visit is the famous Doyle’s Seafood; a beachside restaurant that’s been around since 1885. Get a seafood takeaway pack and eat it on the grassy park as you marvel at the million dollar harbour views.
The Sydney Highlights
Basking in the culture of a place is key to a meaningful holiday. When it comes to Sydney, if you’re after people-watching head down to The Rocks. Take a stroll down the cobblestone paths and get lost in the artisan markets. The Rocks Markets are on every Saturday and Sunday, with a special Foodies Market on Fridays. You’ll find food, jewellery, homewares, clothes, linen, photography and art on display – a lot of it locally made.
Walk around the Harbour to the 30-hectare oasis that is the Royal Botanic Gardens. The garden was established in 1816, making it the oldest scientific institution in the country. Bring a picnic, take one of the tours and let the kids play on the grass.
Where to Stay
Sydney is home to plenty of luxury hotels but there’s also plenty of diamonds in the rough. Try the Y Hotel Hyde Park and Central Station Hotel for good 3 star options. If you’re on an extremely tight budget, there’s plenty of hostels around town. Check out Expedia’s Sydney Holidays.
