How long have you lived on Oahu?
I was born and raised on Oahu. It’s home for me. Although my love of travel has taken me to many incredible destinations, I can’t imagine living anywhere else. I love the natural beauty of the island, the food, and the warmth of the people.
Describe your perfect weekend on the island.
Saturday would start with a hike up Diamond Head Crater and then a stroll through the KCC farmers’ market. The market is located across the street from the crater entrance and has lots of fresh produce, beautiful flowers and wonderful food booths. I’d then enjoy the rest of the day swimming and reading at the Outrigger Canoe Club. Sunday I’d spend a couple of hours at the Honolulu Museum of Art with lunch at their café. I’d then enjoy a home-cooked meal with family and friends.
What are your favourite restaurants to take friends and family?
For a relaxing lunch, there is nowhere better than Orchids at the Halekulani. The view of Diamond Head and Waikiki beach is spectacular. I also love the shrimp trucks out on the North Shore, the acai bowls at Diamond Head Cove Health Bar, and Maile’s Thai Bistro.
What’s something about Oahu that not many people know about?
Iolani Palace, located in downtown Honolulu, is the only royal residence in the United States.
What are your favourite island activities?
I love hiking up to Makapuu Lighthouse or back to Manoa Falls, swimming with sea turtles and boating out to see the Hawaiian spinner dolphins.
What advice would you give to first-time visitors to Hawaii?
Take a helicopter ride! It’s truly the most amazing way to see the real untouched beauty of the island. If flying isn’t an option, try to do an island tour. They’re a great way to take in the rich culture, legends, and history of the different areas.
What are the best places to take kids?
The beach, Bishop Museum, and the Polynesian Cultural Center.
Most relaxing beach?
Lanikai.
Favourite off-the-beaten-path spot?
The Byodo-In Temple at the base of the Koolau mountains.
Best nightlife destination?
Addiction in the Modern Honolulu Hotel.
Next time you’re in Oahu, stop by and visit Noelani at the Local Expert desk in the Wyndham Resort on Beach Walk in Waikiki.
