Cape Jervis

With wildlife and a rich and diverse natural environment, this small South Australian town is a great place for nature lovers and outdoor enthusiasts.

Cape Jervis is a tiny town on the southwestern tip of the Fleurieu Peninsula. What it lacks in size it more than makes up for in scenic beauty and outdoor adventures. It is also a gateway to the many attractions of Kangaroo Island. Hike through forests and mountains, spot kangaroos and other wildlife and sample local wines and gins.

Explore the area's wild and natural scenery. Drive east of the town for about 20 minutes to the Deep Creek Conservation Park. This protected area of the Fleurieu Peninsula coastline encompasses forests and green-covered hills and is home to kangaroos, echidnas and dozens of bird species. Hike along walking trails and stay overnight in one of the campgrounds.

Go on daylong walks or more extensive hikes along the Heysen Trail. This 750-mile (1,200-kilometer) walking trail extends from Cape Jervis to Parachilna Gorge, passing through forests, vineyards, mountain ranges, historical towns and farms. You’ll also find good walking along the cliffs and rocky headlands of Rapid Bay, 10 miles (16 kilometers) north of the town.

For more outstanding natural beauty, take the car ferry to Kangaroo Island. The journey is about 45 minutes each way. Stroll along beaches, visit a colony of sea lions and venture into the subterranean world of strange limestone rock formations at Kelly Hill Caves. Tackle the 41-mile (66-kilometer) Kangaroo Island Wilderness Trail and enjoy a range of other attractions on the island, including a wildlife park, wineries, a distillery and coastal towns and villages. Stay overnight in hotels, lodges and camping and caravan sites.

When you return to the mainland, visit the Cape Jervis Lighthouse. It was first lit in 1871, but the current tower dates back to 1972.

Reach Cape Jervis by flying into Adelaide's international airport. Rent a car and follow the Main South Road out of the city. Driving time to your vacation destination of scenic beauty, fascinating wildlife and island exploration is about 2 hours.
