Start your visit in the state’s stylish capital, Adelaide. The city is centrally located just a few hours’ drive from South Australia’s famous wine, outback and coastal regions. Visit Adelaide in February and March, when the city hosts a selection of festivals, including the famous Adelaide Fringe. See sensational sports events, music concerts and arts performances. Stroll along the Torrens River and see black swans or join the crowds at an Australian Football League match at Adelaide Oval.
Head north from Adelaide to visit the magnificent Flinders Ranges and Wilpena Pound, a natural crater surrounded by outback mountain ranges. Hike the trails at Arkaroo Rock to see native flora and 5,000-year-old Aboriginal rock paintings. Australia’s famous frontier history lives on at the historic Pichi Richi Railway, a picturesque train line which operates services from Port Augusta and Quorn in the Flinders Ranges.
Take in views of Australia’s dramatic southern coastline at Fleurieu Peninsula, home to the McLaren Vale winery region and gateway to Kangaroo Island. Reach the picturesque island via a 45-minute ferry and explore the island by foot, car or bicycle to see stunning scenery and native wildlife.

South Australia is known worldwide for its fine produce and prized wines. Visit Clare Valley and Barossa Valley, both within 2 hours’ drive of Adelaide, to sample excellent wine, beer and cuisine, largely influenced by the area’s German settlement over 150 years ago.
Reach South Australia with interstate train and bus services or by plane to Adelaide Airport and Mount Gambier Airport. Rent a car to explore the state but take care when driving through remote areas where vineyards outnumber fuel stations.
