About the Area
Nestled just 4 miles inside the southern entrance of Yosemite National Park is the charming and historic town of Wawona. Located at the base of Chilnualna Falls (the second-highest vertical-drop waterfall in Yosemite), and home to the principal trailheads into the southern Yosemite wilderness, Wawona is also the closest town to the Mariposa Grove of Giant Sequoias. Wawona has the feel of a small town but is bustling with activity! Over 160 residents, including Yosemite Park employees, live in Wawona and can be seen gathering at the town's community center, playing a pickup game of basketball at the elementary school, jogging on one of the many picturesque trails, or simply walking their dogs and baby strollers through the winding residential streets. The historic Wawona Swinging Bridge boasts the best natural water slide in the Park! The history village is filled with docents, stagecoach rides, horseback rides, and barn dances in the summer season, and the Wawona Meadow Loop offers year-round riparian meadow wildlife viewing. Wawona was known to the local Native American Miwok in their language as Pallachun (a good place to stay). It is entirely within Yosemite National Park (it preceded the park's founding as a national recreation area) and is on the South Fork of the wild and scenic Merced River, along the main highway (State Route 41) from Fresno to Yosemite Valley. Galen Clark, who helped gain preservation legislation for Mariposa Grove and what later became part of Yosemite National Park, occupied the Wawona area in 1855 and established a tourist rest and modest ranch, which he later sold and made into a hotel and resort property (the Wawona Hotel). The Wawona post office was established in 1878 and was originally called Clark's Station. The Redwoods in Yosemite has over 120 vacation rental homes and is proud to say that all of them are located in Wawona. All are within walking distance of everything that Wawona has to offer, and every one of them is surrounded by the majesty of Yosemite National Park!

Wonderful cabin! I love that it’s older, but is very well kept up. Nice amenities —very good kitchen for cooking and nice dishwasher! Mariposa Grove is very close by and Yosemite Valley is a little less than an hour away , which is fine because the drive is scenic
We had a very cozy cabin with all the amenities of home. Our cottage was clean and the surroundings were beautiful. The staff and locals of this community are very friendly and helpful.
The cabin was awesome and we would recommend to anyone and would stay there again. It was very cozy and quiet and well appointed. It was the perfect rustic cabin in the park. The Wawona general store was 100 yards away and had all the essentials one would need. Can’t say thank you enough for a wonderful stay!
Walk about is perfect for four people. Clean, well stocked with needs for a couple days. Very rustic and gave the feel of a mountain cabin! Neighborhood is in the park, can see your neighbors but also private enough. Enough hikes right outside the front door so you don’t even need to drive into the valley unless you want to. Great gas grill.
We loved our stay. We didn’t have to wait to get in the park. The property was quiet and far enough away from the craziness in the Valley. We didn’t mind the drive. It was very clean and had everything we needed. I highly recommend staying here instead of Yosemite valley.
The cabin was a cozy spot to rest after days of adventure. Some parts of the cabin were a little tired, but that is part of the cabin charm. We loved having fires!
It was well equipped and beautiful. All of the details was perfect with lamps with super cute animals , mostly bears . We loved it . Every corner of the house was well designed with a nice photo and nice decoration.
What a comfortable, lovely cabin! We loved the real batten door.
The directions to get there were clear, the location was perfect - away from the hubub, but a pretty drive to the valley.
The home was clean, and everything we needed to use for cooking was available.
The beds were comfortable, and there was ample seating for our evenings.
If you are planning a trip to Yosemite this area is perfect! The Walk-A-Bout cabin is exactly what we were hoping for. We stayed for several days and leaving every morning from this location made our days so much more enjoyable. The day we left the park we were shocked at the line of cars waiting to enter. It was at least a mile long! We will definitely return to this cabin when we return to Yosemite!
Great property, all the amenities you need. Very clean and well equipped. Beds were comfortable. It is over an hour drive to the valley which is a little more than we realized when we booked, but there was enough to do in the area. We did the Saturday night BBQ at Wawona resort next door that was affordable and a really nice way to end our vacation. We didn’t plan on golfing but the course was so close me and my son walked on for a 7am tee time and let my Wife and daughter sleep in and we’re back by 9am for a day of exploring.
