Have coffee near a pavilion and marvel at the intricate and baroque features of one of Chiang Mai’s most important temples.

Wat Phra Singh is a 14th-century Buddhist temple known for containing the iconic Phra Buddha Sihing statue. It has well-kept grounds with coffee stands dotted around the impressive pavilions. Enjoy the serene ambiance in the gardens and around the chapels of this historic complex.

Stroll to the small assembly hall known as the Whihan Lai Kham and gaze at the important Phra Buddha Sihing statue, which is surrounded by many legends. It is carried through the streets during the Songkran festival each year in mid-April, when locals spray it with water.

Admire the gilded canopies and golden carvings that adorn the spectacular interior of this chapel. Appreciate the excellent Lanna monastic architecture. Follow the stories depicted in the wall murals dating back to the 1820s. Visit the Ho Trai temple library and capture photos of its half-red and half-white façade. It is recognizable by its bas-relief angels and stucco pavilion.

See the octagonal-based chedi, which is the principal Buddhist building. Nearby is the Viharn Luang, an assembly hall that is the largest structure in the temple complex. Note its high red roof and white columns. Enter to see the gold-and-copper Phra Chao Thong Tip image of the seated Buddha.

Speak with some of the 700 monks, who are often interested in practicing English with visitors. They occasionally partake in activities with children and members of the community. Purchase food and drinks from the many stalls. Note that the temple is particularly busy during national holidays and Buddhist ceremonies.

There is a fee to enter the main religious building. The complex opens daily from early morning until evening.

Find Wat Phra Singh in the western part of the historic district in the northern section of Chiang Mai. Visit other intriguing structures, such as the Phae Gate, the Wat Chiang Man and the Three Kings Monument, in the square zone surrounded by the city walls and a moat.
