Waihi and gold mining go way back and today the town and its mine are inseparable, both still going for gold.
Right beside the town of Waihi is the massive pit of the Martha Mine. With access ramps spiralling deep into the earth, this large open cut mine is still in use. Along with the Waihi Gold Discovery Centre, the mine tour tells the story of what makes Waihi shine. And, apart from gold and silver, there are more natural treasures to discover. The Karangahake Gorge, Waihi beach and Hauraki Rail Trail are just some of Waihi’s hidden gems.
