As the locals joke: “Lemon & Paeroa is world famous in New Zealand”, but they’ve got more to brag about than inventing this soft drink.

Everyone who rocks up in Paeroa is greeted by a 7m-high bottle of L&P, a fizzy drink made from the local spring water. Paeroa is also the “Antiques Capital of New Zealand” and is famous for being the gateway to the Hauraki Rail Trail and the Karangahake Gorge Walkway. Plus, it’s the jumping-off point for the Coromandel Peninsula. Insider’s tip: This usually quiet town roars to life during the annual Battle of the Streets and the Highland Games.

The chalet was clean and tidy, although some of the light fittings either had blown bulbs or the light switches were faulty, as lights didn't always work. It was warm and the bed was comfortable.
