When is the best time to go to Totara Park?

The best time to go to Totara Park is during the summer months, from December to February, or the shoulder seasons of spring (September to November) and autumn (March to May). Summer offers the warmest and driest weather, making it ideal for outdoor activities like hiking, swimming in the river, and picnicking. The longer daylight hours mean you can enjoy the park well into the evening. Families with children often find this period superb for making the most of the park's natural playgrounds and open spaces. For those who prefer milder temperatures and fewer crowds, the shoulder seasons are an excellent choice. Spring brings blooming native plants and a fresh feel to the trails, while autumn showcases beautiful changing leaf colours, especially along the riverbanks.

"The worst motel I’ve stayed in for ages. Untidy property; unhelpful manager; staff behaving badly (called police when my autistic son was unwell instead of just checking in on us); mould on shower curtain; radiator heating not working. And the ONLY place to take a $100 bond from me on my entire 8 night trip. Super slow process to get my cash back Highly NOT recommended Stay away! It’s cheap for a reason. Yuk."

Ava Lodge

8/10 Good

"Good - just what I expected. Housekeeping was great. Milk was replaced every day. Could be a bit cleaner but good overall. Great parking. Close to town."

Midway Pacifica Lodge

8/10 Good

"Room needed some maintenance such as broken handle of a window making it difficult to air room out in day and the door was super stiff and not on runners properly making difficult to open the door especially with a sleeping toddler in one arm. Said daily room service such as towels but there were a couple days we had no clean towels. They did provide dishwashing liquid and dish brush but no tea towel to dry dishes"

Settlers Motor Lodge

8/10 Good

"Things that the great cleaning staff would not have reason to notice: The TV had no sound on "Live TV" (freeview) so it was not worth watching the news or weather forcast as we wanted. We tried every button we could try on the remote but could not get any sound for Live TV. And many of the other apps supplied (Netflix, Prime, Disney, etc) needed a sign-in so no use to us. That said, we did manage to find a suitable movie to watch - with sound. Other observations: The light over the mirror in the bathroom was very faint - great for toileting (without blinding us) in the middle of the night. But hopeless for applying make-up, even in the daylight of morning. Also there was no hairdryer - just on the weekend that we forgot to bring out own as we usually do. And while we had enough light for what we needed, the main light in the middle of the room was not working. All of that said, value for price was excellent for us. We would certainly return if we had a need for accomodation in the area."
