Tasman Peninsula Travel Guide

Tourist Guide
Port Arthur Historic Site featuring autumn colours and a garden
Tour the wild landscapes of this southern peninsula, which is peppered with monumental natural attractions and convict heritage sites.

Uncover some of Tasmania’s dark convict past while exploring the awe-inspiring landscape of the Tasman Peninsula. The region offers nature, adventure and history. Embark on coastal walks, see monumental rock formations and visit an old penal colony.

The peninsular is connected to mainland Tasmania via a narrow isthmus called Eaglehawk Neck. Ferocious dogs used to guard this area to capture convicts who had escaped from Port Arthur. Just beyond this strip of land is the Tasman National Park, a wild expanse of diverse and dramatic scenery. Check out its staggering rock formations, including Devil’s Kitchen, Tasman Arch and the Blowhole.

Thrill seekers can abseil and climb cliffs and dolerite columns and try hang gliding at a launch site overlooking Pirates Bay. Go bushwalking along the many tracks that snake their way through the park. They range from short trails that take less than 2 hours to cover to the Three Capes Track, a 4-day/3-night adventure. This 46-kilometre (28.6-mile) track passes by some of Australia's tallest cliffs and through eucalypt forests. Among the animals you might see during your time in the park are wombats, seals, possums and Tasmanian devils.

For guaranteed sightings of wildlife, spend some time at the Tasmanian Devil Conservation Park. Watch the marsupials being fed and see other animals, such as pademelons and parrots.

During your travels through the region, sightsee the old convict sites. For a 50-year period in the 19th century, some of Britain's offenders were sent to the Tasman Peninsula. Many ended up at Port Arthur, which was used as a penal settlement.

Visit the Port Arthur Historic Site and tour its old buildings. Discover how inmates were punished when you step inside the Separate Prison. See the remains of a church built by convicts and go to the ruins of the coal mines. This is where the worst offenders were sent to work.

The Tasman Peninsular is approximately 45 kilometres (28 miles) from Hobart. Embark on a road trip through the wild and spectacular landscapes or join a bus or coach tour.
