Dating back to the city’s inception, this church is home to breathtaking 16th-century architecture, thousands of works of art and a converted catacomb.

San Francisco Church is an inspiring complex comprising a temple, several chapels and a convent. The enormous structure, which dates back to Quito’s inception in the 1500s, covers two blocks of the Old Town and belongs to the Franciscan Order heritage. The first bricks were laid only a very short time after the arrival of Spanish conquistadors. Discover the highlights of this historic monument, including its 13 cloisters, elaborate Moorish designs and array of artworks.

You can see the Renaissance and Mannerist styles of the structure’s double-towered façade from Plaza de San Francisco. Archaeologists discovered that the plaza has a natural incline because the church was initially built atop an Incan temple. Note the wide stairs that ascend to the church. The unusual design is said to encourage visitors to bow as they watch their footing while climbing the steps.

Walk inside the church to see its ornate fixtures. As in many Quito churches, there are many representations of the sun, an important Incan symbol, that were initially intended to convince the indigenous peoples to convert to Christianity. Throughout the interior of the church you will see an intriguing blend of Catholic and Incan iconography. Gaze up at the Moorish ceilings, which act as a contrast to the Baroque chapels, nave and golden high altar.

Peruse around 3,500 works of art from San Francisco’s collection dotted around the church. Many of the pieces originate from the illustrious Quito School of Art, including the acclaimed 18th-century sculpture, the Virgin of Quito. Browse the church’s vast library and airy courtyard. Have a look around the unusual gift shop selling regional arts and crafts that is placed among the eerie catacombs.

San Francisco Church is situated by San Francisco Plaza in the Old Town region of the city. Take the trolleybus to Independence Square, which is just 5 minutes away on foot. You can also arrive by car, as there is street parking nearby. The church holds mass on Sundays.
