We had a great stay at the Hill Station Boutique Hotel, Sapa. Manu was very kind to us, we had arrived from the overnight train to Lao Cai at 5.30am, and after the 1 hour bus trip got to the hotel at around 7am. He had previously arranged for an early check in which was great, so we were able to unload our luggage, shower and get ready for our first day in Sapa.
The restaurant downstairs has an extensive menu of food, definitely a fan of the local Vietnamese soup that goes with rice (chanh?), as well as different flavoured rice wine.
Manu also allowed us to have a late check out the following day, as our train back to Hanoi wasn't under 8.45pm.
We highly recommend the hotel, beautiful rooms, a super super comfortable bed, and a 5 minute walk to the city centre chapel.
This 3 room hotel is the unloved step-child of a decent restaurant.
Essentially the design of the restaurant, and the rooms, is excellent. But it is obvious that management is focused on the restaurant at the expense the accommodation.
During our 3 night stay there was no housekeeping except for a change of towels - not acceptable at this price point. We highlighted the issue to the Polish manager but he seemed uninterested.
On the plus side, the local staff are very kind and friendly. Also the views are excellent, if not as good as the neighbouring hotels.
Fantastic bed and helpful staff combined with a fantastic restaurant. The staff understood our needs and were consistently high quality and flexible in their approach. The room was well appointed with a fantastic bed and wonderful view of the surrounding mountains. The attention to quality and local ingredients and lifestyle were apparent everywhere.
Awkward checkin. The reception would not confirm my reservation. I insisted that I had an expedia reservation, but they would not check it in their records. Seemed easy enough, and they were by no means busy, having only 3 rooms in the whole hotel. Nevertheless, they gave me a key to a room.
They also wouldn't take any passport or id card from me. I had no idea if I was at the right hotel or my stay was being registered, since no information was exchanged. Very weird.
Getting a wifi password was also a long and arduous affair. I asked them to write it down or type it in my phone so I can see it, but the receptionist wouldn't do it. They would type it in the blind mode on my phone, but refused to let me see it. So I had to bring every one of my devices for them to enter the password?
Wifi signal is little to non-existent in the rooms. It's quite good in the lobby and restaurant.
I also had dinner at the their restaurant. They forgot one of our dishes, but charged us for it. I pointed this out, and they corrected it. The dinners there are not cost-effective. It looks good, but you leave hungry. I also tried the rice wine taster set. Some explanation about what we were tasting would seem appropriate in this occasion, especially since they were selling the rice win as take away gifts in the lobby, but the staff had no interest in that sort of engagement with customers.
The view from the room is partly blocked by the next building, so you don't get the grand view of the fields.
