Less than 24 hours before our arrival we received an email letting us know that they were doing some work on the exterior of the house. When we arrived we were shocked to see the state of the exterior and yard. New siding only partially installed on each side of house, large piles of debris in yard, planks of wood with nails sticking out, packaging shoved under deck and blown around yard, cigarette butts near deck, loose nails and screws, tools and uninstalled windows filling the sun room, which also had a toxic smell. We had concerns about the safety of our toddler playing in the yard. Lori offered us a full refund and to help find us somewhere to move the next day. She said she was not sure about the workers’ schedule at that time and the parts were on backorder. At that point we decided not to move, as we had already unpacked and did not want to spend another half day packing and repacking. In addition, we had concerns about what properties would be available on such short notice and it was important to us to stay in that specific neighborhood, as we had family staying right nearby. We decided to contain the debris as much as we could and go through with our planned bbq the next day. We warned people with small children to be mindful of the hazards and to keep a close eye on the kids. We were alarmed when despite our efforts, our 3 year old nephew handed us a 3 inch screw he had found on the deck. On Monday the construction workers arrived at 8:45 a.m. to continue installing the siding on the house without any notice. This meant extremely loud hammering on the walls, which woke up our daughter. Around the same time as their arrival, I received an email from Lori letting me know that the workers would be there that day, but that the contractor said they could finish within a short amount of time, and would just be there for a couple hours while we were at the beach. This was grossly inaccurate. They were there for more than three days of our stay, with noise so loud we could not be there starting early in the morning. We were offered a refund of less than two nights of the rental rate. We requested more and were turned down, with them arguing we had declined the initial offer to move (made before we were aware workers would be present) and since they had driven by and seen us enjoying the yard during our bbq (again, before the work started), and had accepted the initial refund offer (which we did not). We will not be back.
